A lady of sixty who bad been twenty years in New Zealand was surprised to find that she could not receive an oldage pension of 17s Cd a week with under 23 years’ residence (says an exchange). She decided to go to England in the hope of receiving more liberal treatment, but on arrival there learnt that the minimum age in England ie 70 years, the maximum pension 5s a week, and a continuous residence of 12 years is a necessary qualification. With a view to upholding the reputation of shooting that the senior cadets of the district have won for themselves, the Defence Department has arranged a three-day musketry course to be held at Waiwakaiho. Commencing at 9 a.m. each day, the boys will be put through various practices each day to enable the local authorities to find the best talent to compete- in the shield competitions, which will be decided shortly. Provided the employers of New Plymouth are able to give assistance to their young employees, the course should be very successful and the results of it fruitful. “There’s a young lady down there in trousers!” was the greeting with which hardened commercial travellers, who arrived early, greeted their colleagues aS they arrive:! at the New Plymouth railway station before the departure of the mail train yesterday morning. It was strange how many passengers found that they had important letters to pest, for the route to the mail van gave them what the camera men call a “close up” view. The young lady, who was rather nonchalant in the early stages, appeared to lose some of her self-control, and by the time the train drew out of the station she was apparently not sorry to seek the seclusion of a taxi. Her ears would have burned could she have heard the remarks passed by some elderly ladies certainly not of the modern school.
