ADRIFT WITHOUT HOPE

BRIDAL TRAGEDY OF THE SEA. Arriving at Kalmar, South Sweden, a few weeks ago. the Finnish schooner Vesta brought Stoker Persson, who had been picked up in a drifting lifeboat in the Gulf of Finland. He was the only survivor of the 'Swedish steamer Yryggve. missing since August 14. He was not. able to give a complete account of what obviously wits a terrible sea tragedy. Of the Tryggve’s original complement of crew and passengers, a total variously stated at 12 to 16, four men and two women sank with the steamer. The captain and the remainder of the crew. with, two passengers, the latter a newly married Stockholm couple named Lindgreen, took to a lifeboat and drifted several days. Then the Lindgreens both jumped overboard, mentally affected. Gradually the others dissappeared in the same way, leaving only the captain and Persson.

When the captain died from exhaustion, his body was pushed overboard by Persson, who alone survived to tell the tale.
