KAPONGA NEWS

SUMMER PASTIMES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) In beautiful sunshine the official opening of the town tennis courts took place on Thursday afternoon, but the rather boisterous wind made play far from accurate. Outside visitors included representatives from Te Ngutu, Riverlea, Kaponga Convent School, and these, with a number of onlookers, as well as the club’s own members, made a good crowd. Proceedings were enlivened by two mixed doubles “Yankee” tournaments, in which both visiting and club members participated. The winners of the first tournament were Mesdames A. Freeman and M. AV. Priest who, after a close game with Mrs. 0.-E. Champtlon and Mr. B. Hammersley, defeated them by four games to two. The game between Mrs. A. Freeman and Mr. T. Hammersley against Mrs. M. Priest and Mr. B. Hammersley was the closest of the day, being three all before the former two gained the victory. Each of the winners received a small memento.

A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by lady members of the club. A competition for an ash tray and set of d’oyleys was won by Mrs. R. Grace. Play was continued till dusk, just allowing sufficient time for the final of the second tournament.

Another pleasant croquet afternoon was held on Mi’s. H. J. Briggs’ lawn on Wednesday afternoon before a good muster of enthusiasts, the object of the effort being to assist the funds of the St. Mark’s Church bazaar to take place at a later date. The winner of the golf cioquet tourney was Mrs. J. Dawson, while for the trail competition Mrs. Hawkins claimed the honours. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn.

As a fitting conclusion to the opening day of both the croquet and bowling greens on Thursday next, the ladies of the former have decided to hold a dance in the Town Hall, when intending patrons will be well catered for with a good dance programme, including several novelty dances, as well as an open and maiden waltzing competition which should prove very popular. For nondaneers a euchre tournament will be held. The running of free conveyances from Stratford has always proved a popular move to visitors from there. The Kaponga Cycle Club will hold a jiinior road race at 2 p.m. to-day, the distance being 11 miles and the route round the Palmer Road block. Handicaps have been declared as follow: Two minutes, R. Hosie, H. Thorpe, E. Lines; three minutes, D. Curran, W. Leppard; four minutes, G. Williams, L. Hitchcock; four and a half minutes, B. Myhill, H. George.
