BOWLING SEASON OPENS

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUBS FINE WEATHER AND GOOD GREENS KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED. Fine weather and good greens favoured the opening of the bowling season in New Plymouth on Saturday and large crowds were in evidence at every green. Visitors from outside were especially in evidence, some hailing from Awakino, Stratford, Inglewood, Waitara and Oka to.

After the customary remarks by the president of each club—New Plymouth, Fitzroy, West End, Vogeltown and Paritutu—in which reference was made to the past season, the usual president’s by vice-presidents’ matches were played.

NEW PLYMOUTH OPENING. LARGE NUMBER OF VISITORS. The opening of the season at the New Plymouth greens was characterised by a large number of visitors. Bowlers were present from Stratford, Inglewood, Waitara, Okato and other clubs, and many enjoyable games were played. The president, Mr. A. E. Washer, in his opening address, thanked the members for waiting till the official opening day before they used the greens. He hoped all would now find them to their satisfaction. Congratulatory messages were received from sister elubs in New Plymouth and one from Mr. C. E. Bellringer, M.P., a member of the club. Mrs. Washer started the games by throwing the first kitty. Besides the bowling opening, the Central Croquet Club, on the same grounds, also began their season, when some splendid games were played. Afternoon tea for all was served by Mrs. Washer and assistants. OPENING OF NEW SEASON. Amid the leafy surroundings of the West End Club’s beautiful greens, the 1927-28 bowling season was successfully opened in the presence of a large number of enthusiasts. The president, Mr. T. McPhillips, in declaring the green open, reviewed the season and congratulated the club on their performances. Trophies won during the past season were presented, while messages of congratulation from other clubs' were read. Mrs. McPhillips threw the jack and played the first bowl. During the afternoon a number of ladies provided a very enjoyable afternoon tea.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Many members and visitors were present at the opening of the Fitzroy Club 'where, on the delightfully sheltered green, the season was ideally began. In declaring the green open the president, Mr. P. J. H. White, extended a welcome to the visitors and especially to members of the newly formed Awakino Club. Congratulatory messages were read from a number of elubs, and Mr. L. Sampson, a member of the centre executive, complimented the club on its position and upon the excellent condition of the green. Mention was made that Fitzroy had won the Avery Cup for winter play and had been runners-up in the banner coin-

petitions last season. They had been beaten by Avon (Stratford) by one point. Mrs. P. J. H. White was invited to throw kitty and the first bowl was duly chalked. After this a match, winter players, led by the president, versus allcomers, led by the past president, Mr. J. W. Abbott, was won by the former by the narrow margin of 12 points.. During the afternoon an energtic band of ladies dispensed afternoon tea, which added greatly to the pleasure of the gathering. VOGELTOWN CLUB. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Over a hundred people, including a number of ladies, were present at the official opening of the Vogeltown Club. The greens were in splendid order, and the beautiful natural surroundings in which the club’s greens are set, combined with the life and movement of humanity to make a charming and picturesque scene. Seven full rinks were engaged in play throughout the afternoon, the president’s team defeating the vicepresident’s by 183 points to 140. The season was officially opened by the president, Mr. W. Healy, who referred to several matters of "club interest, and expatiated on the value of bowling. The pastime had, he said, grown to be as essential to middle-aged and elderly men as schools were for children. A further important function of bowling cl-bs -was their value as beautifying societies, as a glance at the environment of most "bowling greens would show.

Mr. Healy then proceeded to present the champion cup to Mr. Townsley, who had won it outright by securing the honour for three consecutive seasons. As Mr. Townsley could not be present, having moved away from New Plymouth, Mr. Wigley received the cup on his behalf. The junior trophy was presented to Mr. Ernest Fussell, who had the rather unusual distinction of winning jt when under the age of 21 yeaj-s. The North v. South Cup was presented by the president, and also received by him on behalf of the winners.

Miss Healy officially opened the play by throwing the first jack, and after Messrs, G. Browne and Tooke had delivered the first bowls, play proceeded in earnest.

PARITUTU CLUB OPENS. GREEN IN SPLENDID ORDER. The official opening of the Paritutu Club took place before an excellent attendance of members and visiting bowlers. In his opening speech the presi-dent,-Mr. Walls, after asking Mrs. Walls to throw the jack, declared the green open for play. Appreciative reference was made to the work of the green warden (Mr. Jackson) and the excellent state of the green which was considered better than at any time of the elub’s existence. The usual match, president v. vicepresident, took place, the vice-president emerging victorious by 119 points to 81.
