THE CAULFIELD CUP RACE BRILLIANT FINISHING EFFORT. BIG EVENTS AT MELBOURNE, By Telegraph—-Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Oct. 15, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 15. The weather was fine and warm fol the Caulfield races and the going was good. There was an enormous attendance, including the Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, many inter-State visitors, and a few New Zealanders. There was an exciting finish in the Hurdles. Brightsword finished well and beat the pace-maker (Sir Gleam) in the last twenty yards. Salzach was always prominent and won the Nursery brilliantly. He was ridden by W. Duncan. He cost 1100 guineas as a yearling and is a halfbrother to Bairn, the New Zealander. Pentagram fell when leading at the third fence in the Steeples. Woomera led the rest of the journey and won comfortably. He is a brother of the crack jumper Palbi. Textile, finishing with a phenomenal run in the Caulfield Cup, scored a brilliant win. Affirm made a great effort, leading all the way. Star D’Or finished well hut was unlucky in the running. It was ridden by A. Reed. Textile was bred in South Australia and trained by E. O’Dwyer and owned by Messrs. Colin Brown and M. McLean. He won the Toorak Handicap last Saturday. His rider was W. Scanlon. He started with a great run, was interfered with slightly once, awaited a run on the rails at the turn, and then the race was all over. W. Dunean said Royal Charter was neyer out of trouble. Scanlon is a native of Wagga and is 19 years’ old. McLean bought a half share in Textile recently for 750.

Lonieera was always prominent and won the Burwood Handicap nicely. He was trained by the ex-New Zealander Dave Price and ridden by Daniels, who scored his fourth win of the meeting. The imported Quirk, after being in the picture all the way, finished best in the Windsor Handicap, winning nicely. Valaisan gave a lot of trouble at the start and lost ground, chasing the field. Affirm took charge at the start and led out into the straight, followed by Spear Maiden, Royal Charter and Bunkie, with Textile and Star D’Or near the rear. Near the seven furlongs Valorem took second place, with Bunkie, Royal Charter, Cairncross, Imitator and Devonshire handy. Commencing 4 he last six furlongs, Affirm was a length in front, the next being Valorem, Spear Maiden, Imitator, Bunkie, Cairncross and Thracian, with Textile moving on the inside. Affirm led round the turn and was first into the straight, but Textile came with a great run on the rails and won by a length and a quarter, Star finishing well two lengths away. Then came Sun Morn, Valorem, Devonshire, Bunkie, Bombard, Spearset and Beedos. The last two were Three Kings and Valaisan. Time, 2min. 32>J see. The fractional times were: First four furlongs, 51sec.; next two, 24Jsee.; the succeeding two, 25|sec.; the last four, 51Jsec. BURWOOD HANDICAP.
