FALCON ISLAND ERUPTION

OBSERVATION BY LABURNUM. By Telegraph.—Press Assoc'.at'.on. Auckland, Oct. 15. H.M.S. Laburnum, which arrived last night, reports that Falcon Island when seen from the sloop a fortnight ago was well above water and belching out great columns of steam and lava ton-height of 300 feet. The volcano played for about a minute at intervals of 20 minutes, while under observation from the Laburnum from October 4 t’fl 7. The island was.found to be approximately 1730 yards long north, and south, 1430 yards broad east and west. The ’sides sloped up gradually to the edges of the crater which was 305 feet above water level.
