MEETING of the committee. A Hireling of the committee of the Weetowu School wae held on Monday evening, when there were present: Messrs. J. Garcia (chairman), W. J. Ewart, W. J*. Southam, W. G. Curtis, J. Green, L. F. Haylock, R. Gredig and W. Marsden. Messrs. W. A. Brown (headmaster) and A. Mills (relieving headmaster) were also present. Ou behalf of the committee the chairman extended a welcome to Mr. W. Marsden, who had been elected to the committee in succession to Mr. L. S. O’Donnell. A welcome was also extended to Mr. W. A. Brown, who had taken up the position of headmaster that day after leave of absence due to ill health. Leave of absence was granted the secretary, Mr. J. W. Darby, owing to ill-health. It was also resolved to forward him a letter of sympathy and to express the hope that he would soon be restored to his usual health. Mr. W. J. Ewart was appointed acting-secre-tary. The report of the inspector (Messrs. Ballantyne and Griffin) was read, members considering it very satisfactory. It was resolved to express to Mr. Mills the committee's appreciation of the very satisfactory report and to ask him to convey that appreciation to the staff. The acting headmaster reported that for the month ending August 30 there had been three admissions and two withdrawals, the roll number standing at 286. The attendance had been considerably affected, especially in the infant department, owing to an outbreak of measles. The Government photographer had visited the school and photographed the different classes and the sports teams. The truant officer had visited the school in connection with a special case. The board members, together with several officers, had carried out a general inspection of the grounds and buildings. Inspectors Ballantyne and Griffin had paid the annual visit. The finals of the North Taranaki basket ball competition were played on the local court on August 27. The report was adopted. The grounds superintendent (Mr. W. G. Anstis) reported that work had been carried out on the drains, etc., and various improvements had been effected to the grounds. Some further concreting was necessary.—lt was decided to hold a working bee on Saturday afternoon. The visiting committee (Messrs. L. F. Haylock and J. Green) reported that everything was in order about the school buildings. Messrs. J. Green and W. Marsden were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Mr. Brown waited on the committee regarding various matters, including provision of a sports fund and class library for each room starting from primer lit., estimated to cost about <25, the provision of agricultural piote, as well as other minor matters. In connection with the sports fund, Mr. Brown suggested that a considerable sum might to raised by means of shilling subscriptions, and he was authorised to circulate lists. The committee was sympathetic regarding the provision of class libraries, and discussed the raising of funds. It was suggested that the children might assist by holding small entertainments in the school, as was done early last year. Further consideration was deferred. A committee consisting of Messrs. J. Green and W. G. Anstis wae set up to go into the question of an agricultural plot, a piece of ground’ being suggested which Mr. Anstis offered to plough. Regarding the financed position it was stated that it would-be necessary to raise about <l6 to wipe off all liabilities in connection witlt the school ground improvements, and it was decided to hold a school concert and entertainment towards the close of the year for the purpose.
