Marshal Sun-Chuan-Fang ordered a general crossing of the Yangtsze by several columns. Small transports landed many thousands of Northerners on the south Trank, causing' the Southerners to retreat, and virtually placing Nanking and Chinkiang in their hands. By this evacuation the position of foreigners in Nanking has been made untenable and all have deserted the town, takng shelter in the gunboats *0; their respective countries, which were standing by in case of emergency. Tokio, Aug. 30.
The Emperor has sanctioned the withdrawal of the Japanese troops from Shantung. The Foreign Office has issued a statement that the situation has been stabilised at present, but in the event of disturbances in the future Japan will be constrained to assume an attitude, of self-defence.
