CANADA DEFEATS OTAGO

MARGIN, SIX GOALS TO TWO SUPERIORITY OF THE TOURISTS. VISITING PLAYER ORDERED OFF. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. In the presence of 3000 spectators, Otago met the Canadian Association football representatives on the Carisbrook ground. The weather was fine overhead and there was an absence of sun and wind. With a score of two goals each towards the close of the first half, the hepes of Otago supporters were encouraged. Canada’s all-round superiority, however, began to tell and while the local eleven had a fair share of opportunities, Canada had no great difficulty in registering victory by six goals to two. Balk led the Otago attack which was promptly repulsed, and Canada advanced on the right wing. A good cross from the visitors’ left wing saw Anderson bustle Gibson, but the ball went to Francis, whose likely shot just missed. Otago set up a hot attack, McHugh’s shot looking dangerous, but the defence was sure. The visitors swung back and Thompson sent a well placed pass to Francis, who scored rather simply. Otago replied with a vigorous advance, but lacked cohesion. Neat footwork removed play to the local defence area where a beautiful pass by Pogson enabled Archibald to score Canada’s second goal with a neat drive. The home team’s combination improved and Canada’s defences were endangered. Craw.ley shouldered an Otago player and a penalty kick was awarded, from which McCormack scored for Canada. As the result of a collision, Munsie (Otago) had to leave the field for ten minutes. Play was fairly even for ten minutes, Canada being conspicuous for spectacular headwork and excellent playing. At last Munsie drove well to Hooper, who hooked overhead cleanly into the goal, bringing the scores even. Otago were now having the better of play, but could not penetrate the solid defence of the visitors. Just before half-time Canada scored two goals in quick succession, one by Archibald from a clever pass by Pogson, and the next a smart header by Pogson. Weak kicking by the Otago backs let the visitors in early in the second half. Francis drove in a hard shot which Callaghan saved, but Thompson closed in quickly and scored in the corner. Otago responded, McHugh, Hooper and Duncan sending in shots which missed. Pretty play on Canada’s right wing left Archibald a fine shooting opportunity, but his ehot went wide. Shortly afterwards Francis just missed. The pressure finally told. Pogson forced a corner against Anderson and from Pogson’s corner kick Callaghan saved, but Mona van trapped and drove smartly into the net. Otago cleared their goal and Duncan sped across the field to pass to McCormack, whose deft left footer was cleverly cleared by Tate. With twenty minutes to go Canada lost the services of ’ Thompson in consequence of a collision with Anderson. Later on Edmunds was ordered off the field for language to the referee, who had penalised him, and Canada finished with nine men. There was no further score.

Mr. A. Preston was the referee. Some of his decisions were not well received by the visitors.
