STRATFORD DISTRICT NEWS

(FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTERS)

ELECTRICAL CHANGE OVER.

STRATFORD’S NEW POWER. It is learned from an ofSeial source that the Stratford Diesel power plant will close down on June 30, and the hydro station will continue in operation until the last wiring change has taken place. There are still about 110 places depending on the old wiring system, but these are being converted at the rate of 15 to 20 a week. At present the outside staff is busy re-wiring the streets in the south-east corner of the town. “Everything is progressing satisfactorily with regard to the change over, although subsequent to the heavy rainfall of the last few days the river has been bringing down a large quantity of debris, which is causing trouble at the hydro station by partially blocking the water intakes, and thus limiting the amount of water which reaches the turbines,” said Air. A. E. Moss, wiring superintendent to the Stratford Borough Council, when seen by a Daily News reporter yesterday. Mr. Moss went on to state that borough officials were very pleased with the constant pressure being maintained by the Taranaki Power Board’s plant at Motokawa. The Stratford town load now being carried was in the vicinity of 300 k.w. JUNIOR 700TBALL. The following appointments have been

made for the central division junior football matches on Thursday:—Midhirst v. Celtic, at Midhirst, Mr. F. Julian. Cardiff v. Inglewood, at Cardiff, Mr. 1 H. Gush. Toko v. Stratford, at Stratford, Mr. C. F. Stratford. Third Grade. Stratford v. S.T.H.S., at school grounds, Mr. R. R. Tyrer. Toko v. Midhirst, at Toko, Mr. G. Were. Celtic v. Inglewood, at Stratford, Mr. A. O'Sullivan. GENERAL ITEMS. . During April, the Stratford Egg Circle received 650 dozen- eggs, about half of which were sold for local consumption. The balance found a ready market at Tangarakau. The pay-out for the month averaged 2s lid per dozen, which was 3d per dozen better than for the corresponding month of last year. In April, 1927, however, eggs were more numerous, the circle having received just on 800 dozen for the mouth. With the letting of a contract for felling the row of pine trees bordering ou the railway boundary of their reserve, the Toko Domain Board have taken the first steps to effect the long contemplated improvements to the sp.rtsground and the racing track. It is fully expected that the work will be finished well before the spring, though the additional ground thus made available may not actually be used for football. It is probable, however, that the ground will have consolidated sufficiently for the track to be in excellent condition for next year’s sport.

At the invitation of the Stratford Progress League, Mr. J. C. Anderson, who lectured here last year on New 1 Zealand Bird Life, has consented to give another lecture this year on Maori and Polynesian Mythology. The following team will represent the Stratford Wesley Hockey Club to play in the hockey tournament at Victoria Park on Friday: R. Lilly, F. Hale, E. Hale, J. Hale, C. Foster, W. Hale, C. Dudding, A. Gaze, T. Ward, H. Kendrick, raid R. Kelly. Emergencies: A. Knightley, E. Davis and W. Davis. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. Barker, of Stratford, and Mrs. Soothill, of Manaia, left for Auckland and Rotorua by the mail train yesterday morning. Miss M. Morrissey left for Hamilton by the mail train yesterday morning. KING’S THEATRE. "DENVER DUDE.” Last night saw a packed house to witness the screening of the Universal picture "Denver Dude,” starring Hoot Gib’son. As in other pictures, Hoot delivers the goods, and one could not wish for a better night’s entertainment. The playing of the King’s all soloists instrumental trio under the direction of Miss A. Mitchell was all that could be desired. We recommend oiie and all to see this very fine programme.
