THE SITUATION IN CHINA
SHANGHAI TENSION RELAXED. GREATER MENACE IN NORTH. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 30. Chinese in Shanghai are holding demonstrations to-day to commemorate the rioting there two years ago. The Chinese authorities have warned the demonstrators not to attempt' to enter the international settlement. During the last few weeks the tension in Shanghai has been very considerably relaxed. The commander-in-chief of the China squadron has decided to discontinue the convoying of merchant ships, as firing on steamers on the Yangtsze has now ceased. Destroyers, however, will be held in readiness to deal with any recurrence of firing.
