LONDON’S PORK-SUPPLIES.
The suggestion recently made by the British Trade Commissioner (Mr. L. B. Beale/, that there is a good market for pork in London which New Zealand might well exploit -is strongly supported by the latest official statistics. The Meat Producers’ Board Jias just issued a statement showing the supplies of pork to the London market for the quarter ending March 31, comparing them with the supplies received during the same quarter of 1926. The total supplies this year amounted to 10,188 tons, a drop of 4,958 compared with those received in 1926. Supplies from New Zealand amounted to 191 tons, an increase of 9 tons over 1926; Australia supplied 116 tons, an increase of a tons, but supplies from Canada dropped from 293 tons last year to 68 tons in 1927. The effects of the regulations in regard to foot and mouth disease are shown in the imports from the Netherlands. In 1926 these amounted to 10,787 tons, this year they have dropped to 759 tons. No doubt as a result of the embargo upon Continental pork, the production in Great Britain and Ireland has been greatly stimulated. In 1926 only 2,081 tons were home grown, while this year 7,734 tons were supplied locally. It is evident that supplies from the United States are not available as in past years, imports from that country having shrunken from 347 to 233 tons. On the other hand, New Zealand’s rival in tire dairy market, Argentina, has increased her export of pork from 134 Yons to 584, an increase of 450 tons, which makes the progress of the industry in New Zealand appear very insignificant. There is no doubt the market is available, and that this country has all the conditions necessary for developing the industry. It is also certain that if New Zealand does not make any effort. to exploit the market there are rival producing countries who will not neglect the opportunity of doing so.
