ELLERSLIE PREPARATIONS.

Auckland, May 31. There was a fair amount of work but little jumping on the No. 2 grass track at Ellerslie this morning. The weather was fine but the going heavy. Haerera was going better than Gala Day at the end of six furlongs in linin 21sec. Charlady ran five furlongs in Imin 10 4-ssec, going nicely. King Emerald sprinted six furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssee. Luxurious was in front of Tina Maunga and Star Comet at the end of six furlongs in Imin 24 l-ssec. Marble Boy did four furlongs in 59 2-ssee. After breakfast Alonsoa and Wyoming ran seven ftfrlongs in Imin 38 3-ssec. finishing together. Bennanee did strong- work, sprinting the last three furlongs in 43 1-osee. Oration and White Bird were together at the end. of six furlongs run in Imin 23sec. Welkne ran four furlongs in 53 2-ssec. Lupineel and Anchor covered four furlongs in 55 I-osec. Omahu did strong work. Running the first six furlongs in Imin 29sec, he continued for another round. Golden Krist was in front of Royal Mint at the end of seven furlongs run in Imin 39 2-osee. Dclightment was dear of Ahingaro at the end of six furlongs run in Imin 23 2-ssec. x Master Doon covered the last three furlongs of his work in 43 2-ssec; Comical was going easily beside Tinwhistle at the end of five furlongs run in Imin 11 1-asec. Queen Emerald beat Golden Glass over one round in 2min. Harbour View sprinted four furlongs in 56 l-ssec. On the sand Beau Cavalier, Archibald, Dick, Ballymoy XI and others did strong work. The jumpers Enare and Just John were companions for a round of four schooling hurdles, both jumping well. Stellatour did a similar task, jumping satisfactorily. Arrivals are Black Mint, Indian Sage, Nazarino, Waioeka Jack, Delightment, Mengani, Blaek Cruiser, Town Hall, Ramblin’ Kid and Mount Marta. DUNEDIN TRAINING NOTES. Dunedin, May 31. The course was very heavy and the surrounding hills were sprinkled with snow. Work was done on the outside of the course proper. A large number of horses were out, but few worked against the watch. Tholomon and Lutliy finished together over four furlongs in -59 sec. Tarleton ran four furlongs in 56sec, the fastest half-mile of the morning. Hoylake ran half a mile in 60sec easily. Hard Prince jumped five schooling hurdles well in 2min 2sec, the last four furlongs taking Imin 25see —one of the best performances of the week. Paper Boy went four furlongs nicely in 58see, and Doleful Ditty ran the same distance in 58 3-ssec. Scion was schooled over two hurdles, going well with Adjutor. Cassolette beat Solzia over five furlongs in Imin Usee. Ophir ran six furlongs in Imin 32see. Radiac jumped three big fences well, but rather extravagantly. Vice Grand beat Dubious over a circuit on the flat. Celerity II beat Lava and Fairy Herald over four furlongs in 58sec by several lengths. The English mare went very well. Wingatui was too good for Lady Tractor over five furlongs.

Wharncliffe easily beat Relic over seven furlongs and must have a chance in the Jumpers’ Flat. Arrowmir went a good half-mile, the last three furlongs being covered in 46 l-ssec. Set Sail, picked up by Bilbo after going a furlong, ran six furlongs in Imin 3t-see, the best gallop of the morning, as the mare had a good weight up. HAWERA TRACK NOTES. Acred has been hitting out in very pleasing style since he raced at Wanganui. He goes to Otaki to race. Barryander is being kept in work by O. Cox. J. Bryant. is busy breaking in three yearlings for O. Cox. M. Conway has broken in a yearling by Callaghan—Lady Pat, the property of F. Bluet. He is a fine, big, upstanding horse which will most likely take time. The full brother to Glengariff has also been ridden. This is a nice brown in colour and has been well down. C. Jackson’s team, Benzora and Partaga, are both spelling at present, while Jackson has gone north to see the National run. Bonogne, Acred, Captain Gazeley, Paltona, Bevis and Lady Anstruther, k’.ve on Wednesday by the mail train for Otaki. Bonogne was in front of Bevis over five furlongs in 1.9 on the outside of the course proper. Paitonu and Lady Anstruther finished together over six furlongs in 1.24. TURF TOPICS. (By ‘’Moturoa.’’) The Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting opens to-day, and heavy tracks and knee-deep going are practically certain. Fields for to-day’s events are fairly numerous, though of poor quality. The North still holds the upper hand in the jumping season. * Interest will be taken in the appearance of that “once-good-horse,” Pamplona, in the Otago Steeplechase, and he would only need to be a shadow of the horse which he was a few years ago to beat the best in the Dominion with 12st. Two years ago Mr. L. C. Hazlett provided the winner (Pamplona 12.2) and runner-up (Galway 9.11) in the Otago Steeplechase, while in the- Wellington Steeplechase the following, month Pamplona carried-11.1, and ran Omahu (11.5) to a head, the defeated division including Oakleigh, Sir Roseberry, Carawock, Mahuru, Loohella, Sturdee, and other great ’chasers. Pamplona subsequently went wrong, but southern reports show that the aged Pallas gelding is standing up to easy work, and his owner has hopes of him racing well at the meeting. Last year Night Raid led from end to end, and won comfortably from half a dozen moderates. He is in again at the minimum, and may again run well. Master Peter and Birkenella are fairly safe jumpers, and the last-named should be well conditioned. # 4 • • In the minor cress country event, the St. Clair Steeplechase, Maungamoe appears to b® well treated with 10.1, while Osterman has won over the course, and is also in good nick. The Birthday Handicap, one and a-half miles, was won by Full Swing last year, and a rise from 7.2 to 7.5 may not seriously trouble the Nassau maje this time. Vaward (8.1) may be the best of the others over the distance. a • * # In the minor handicaps Equerry (with a record of two seconds and two firsts in the last four starts), Celerity 11, ’Frisco Mail, Bonena and Wingatui are a quartette -which have shown good form recently. • • • • Mount Marta’s name was not sent through amongst the acceptors for the Great Northern Steeplechase, but the Mountain Knight gelding was paid up for. He has 9st., but no credentials for such a race. * * • • The Cornwall Handicap nominal favourite, Degage, pleased the touts at Ellerslie on Monday morning by the way she traversed seven furlongs. She runs out a mile and a-quarter in great style, and was never better than at present. Last season she registered 10 firsts and 3 seconds, and was always “there or thereabouts” when fancied by her party. * * • • Kawini, who is a strong fancy for the Great' Northern Hurdles, gave a fine display over the small fences the same morning, out-jumping and racing away from Karamu. Kawini and Zircon have worked so well that they are sure to have big follow-ings on Friday next. • • « « Fireblight appears to have lost her pace, and also jumped slovenly at Ellerslie on Monday, when Tuki and Passin’ Through easily accounted for her in a round (including the hill) of the steeplechase course. Rayo went with them, but baulked at the water jump, and gave a disappointing display throughout. Maunga jumped practically every fence alike when doing a round with Comical and Omahu. The latter jumped in fine style until he hit the stone wall, and dislodged his rider, but Comical’s fencing was wretched, and it looks as if he is being put to a branch of sport which he dislikes. As a hurdler Comical is in a class by himself, and it will surprise most track-watchers if he gets round in a steeplechase over Ellerslie country. » * * * Anchor was in good fettle when sent to Auckland, and Martonians expect him to get in the money at the meeting. e « « « Diogenes (L. G. Morris) and Tresham (J. Barry) are in the boom for the Raukawa Cup. Bouyant,' Bonogne and Deluge are fancied for the open sprint. * » • The southern hurdler Sayonara, who broke a small bone in a leg last week, is being cared for by R. Longley, and hopes are expressed that the roan Clarenceux gelding will be saved for use as a hack, though his promising racing career may be ended. The following horses have been nominated for the Napier Steeplechaseßirkenella, Little River, Eonmark, Red Cent, Highway, Rayo, Bonny Rill, Crown Coin, Comical, Woden, Koono, and Waioeka Jack. * # » # The Stewards’ Handicap,, one mile, at the same meeting has attracted Perle de Leon, Gaze, Bouyant, Matinee, Rascal, Hathor, Mint Leaf, Royal Diadem, Road Hog, Othon, Wristlet, Huikai, Kilmezzo, Kaiti and Kalos. • * * * The disappointing Comedy King gelding, Mah Jong, will run in the colours of Mr. A. J, Fulton, of Christchurch, in future. The same sportsman recently purchased En Route from Sir Charles Campbell. • • • • Old Scion, who, as a four-year-old, won the New Zealand and Auckland Cups in the season 1922-23,' figures amongst the acceptoiß for the Trial Hurdles at Wingatui to-day.
