JERSEY WEEK SALES

TWO NOTABLE STUDS . BETTER TONE’ PREVAILS. DEMAND FOR YEARLING BULLS. Despite cold and unfavourable weather yesterday, there was a good attendance when the second of the series of “Jersey Week” sales was conducted by Newton King, T td., at Mr. H. M. Purdie’s property, Brixton. Cattle were offered on behalf of Mr. H. B. Lepper, of Te Puke Awa stud, Lepperton, and Mr. H. M. Purdie, of Snow View stud, Brixton. Mr. Lepper was offering his annual draft of in-calf heifers, whilst Mr. Purdie was having a dispersal sale of his in-milk cows, and was also submitting nine yearling bulls. It was pleasing to note a better tone prevailing, buyers being present and operating from the South Island, as well as from various parts of the North Island. Although there were no sensational prices to chronicle, a good average was maintained. Mr. Lepper disposed of ten heifers, at an average price of £32 Is, seven of them by his herd site, Hard Shot, averaging £35 Bs. The top price ( £59 17s) was realised by Maori Dell, by Hard Shot —Maori Ding Dong, which was purchased by W. H. Jakins, of Christchurch. Four yearling bulls were passed. The whole of Mr. H. M. Purdie’s offering (25 cows and 9 yearling bulls) were submitted to unreserved sale, and all were disposed of. The 25 cows averaged £32 18s, and three of them realised 50 guineas and over. The three-year-old Snow View 80-pecp, by Tiki Twylish —Snow View Gem, realised the top price of 55 guineas, being secured by Mr. R. S. Tuck, of Waharoa, Thames Valley. He also secured the four-year-old Snow View Bonnie, by Fair Lady Twylish—Snow View Gem, at 50 guineas, whilst Hamilton Allen, of Kihikihi, Waikato, secured the three-year-old Snow View Roseday, by Holly Bank Squire—Flower 111., at the same price. There was keen demand for the yearling bulls by the herd sire, Enid’s Sultan. The nine submitted elicited spirited bidding and averaged £2B 2s. In fact, Snow View Diamond, out of Snow View Ruby, realised the top price at the sale, 57J guineas, the purchaser being A. Rowe, of Bell Block. A yearling bull sold on behalf of Master Don Luxton realised 22 guineas. The cattle were well distributed, going to as far north as North Auckland and as far south as Otago. The arrangements for the sale reflected credit on the sales manager, Mr. E. Griffiths, a comfortably seated marquee being provided, whilst Messrs. K. Kirk and F. Cameron were in good form with the hammer. Details of the sales are:— TE PUKE AWA STUD. HEIFERS. Maori Belladonna, by Hard Shot— Maori Lily, born November, 1925.—R. C. Leach, Woodville, 37gns.
