BRITAIN’S STAND IN CHINA CRISIS
POLICY OF PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT REPARATION FOR ABUSE DEMANDED DESPATCH OF TROOPS JUSTIFIED * That Britain remains true to her declared policy of negotiation for the peaceful settlement of the Chinese difficulty, but that she will demand reparation for the outrages against Britons at Nanking and elsewhere, were the features of a statement by Sir Austen Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, in the House of Commons. He submitted proof of Cantonese implication in the outrages and justified the despatch of further troops to China on the grounds that the Nationalist Government could not, or would not honourably protect foreigners lawfully, by treaty, following their avocations in China.
