Mr. J. H. Quilliam, who has been on a visit to England, arrived back in New Plymouth yesterday morning. Mr. G. H. Buekeridge, of Hawera, leaves on Friday next by the Mataroa on a short business visit to England. Mr. T. S. Hickey, who recently returned from a trip abroad, has resumed control of the Opunake Times. Resolutions of sympathy with Dr. E. F. Fookes and Mr. C. Carter in their recent bereavements were carried in tho customary manner by the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society yesterday.
An Inercargill message says that th# death occurred after an operation at Dunedin, of Mr. James Fleming, a wellknown Southland farmer, aged 75. He took a prominent part in public affairs and was long identified with the county council, hospital board, A. and P. Society, and other institutions. His estate at Rakahouka was the model farm of Southland.
Before resolutions of sympathy with Messrss. J. Penwarden and C. Carter in their recent bereavements were passed by the Taranaki County Council at its meeting yesterday, it was mentioned that the late Mr. John Penwarden had for a number of years acted as bridge supervisor in the county. Mr. Carter, who recently lost hie wife, represented the Hurworth riding on the council for some years.
Mr George Hill, of Takapuna, better known as “Rowley” Hill, celebrated his 90th birthday on Thursday. He joined the British Navy in 1951 and, after serving in the Crimea and taking part in the relief of Lucknow, he came to New Zealand in 185 J, He joined Von Terapeky’s Forest Rangers and took part in many actions in Taranaki, also on the East ( Coast against Te Kooti and the Hauhaus, where he was awarded the New Zealand Cross.
