PORT TONNAGE RECORD

THE MOTOR-SHIP BRONNOY EIGHT THOUSAND TONS OF CARGO. SAFE BERTHAGE AT NEW PLYMOUTH The largest cargo ever brought to New Plymouth in one vessel arrived in the motor-ship Bronnoy yesterday morning. She has 8090 tons of sulphur from Galvestan (Texas) aboard and the previous record in this respect was held by the City of Corinth which brought 6000 tons of Welsh coal in 1922. One thousand tons of the sulphur will be unloaded here and sent by rail to Wanganui and it is probable that several extra goods trains will be needed to cope with it. Actually the consignment represents six full train loads. Because her draught of 25 feet was too deep for the negotiation of the Wanganui River, the Bronnoy was diverted to New Plymouth to discharge. She had been lying in the Wanganui roadstead since last Friday. No difficulty was experienced in accommodating her at New Plymouth, however, and she was berthed at the Motorua wharf yesterday morning by the harbourmaster (Captain W. Waller). Her draught was 23 feet 8 inches forward and 25 feet 1 inch aft.

As explained in yesterday’s Daily News the Bronnoy is a most up-to-date vessel with five large holds and 10 derricks worked by electric winches of the latest kind. Eight thousand ions of sulphur was loaded in 14 hours. Built at Gothenburg, Sweden, last year, she is a show boat in her class and the quarters for officers and men, the engine-room and the engines themselves are of a type much superior to those of other cargo carriers. Her next port of discharge will be Geelong, for which port she will probably sail to-night. Adelaide, Port Pirie and Port Lincoln will be her next calls.
