OBITUARY
MAORI VETERAN PASSES AWAY. WILLIAM ROBERTSON, AGED 93. With the passing away on Monday of Mr. William Robertson at the advanced age of 93 (reports the Wanganui Chronicle) the few remaining Maori War veterans are still further diminished in numbers. The late Mr. Robertson was a native of Cruden, Aberdeenshire, In 1865 he left Glasgow for New Zealand on the ship Robert Henderson, and after a voyage of over 100 days landed at Wellington, finally settling at Waverley. When the Maori War broke out in the Patea district, the late Mr. Robertson was called to the colours, and he served in the Wairoa Rifles for some time (it might be mentioned that at the unveiling of the Waverley War Memorial some two years ago Mr. Robertson was one of the four remaining members of the Wairoa Rifles). With the cessation of hostilities Mr. Robertson settled at Kakaramea on the farm known as Gushetneuk, and after thirty years went to Waverley to enjoy a welldeserved retirement, filially arriving at Wanganui in 1920. The late Mr. Robertson was a keen bowler, and until last season was an active member of the Wanganui Bowling Club, while his genial personality will be missed by all.
