INFLUENZA OUTBREAK IN EUROPE

EPIDEMIC SWEEPING ACROSS CONTINENT HEAVY DEATHROLL REPORTED FROM MANY COUNTRIES MALADY HM BRITAIN STILL COMPARATIVELY MILD

London, January 4. A serious wave of influenza is sweeping over Europe, and from all countries come reports of growing lists of victims. So far the English epidemic is mild, though it is causing anxiety In Franee. It is most severe in the southern and central districts and less violent in the Paris district. In Montpellier the deaths average 20 daily, and have been as high as 32. One day it was estimated that 100,000 people were affected.

Spain is suffering from a milder form of the malady, though 94 deaths have been reported in Madrid in a week. There are over 2000 cases in Basle, where the schools have been closed. There are 20,000 cases in Berlin alone and work generally is considerably hampered, while in Central Bavaria the epidemic is spreading like wildfire.
