AUSTRALIAN POPULATION
STEADY INCREASE SHOWN. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, Jan. 3. An official report, shows that the population of the Commonwealth at September 30 last totalled 6,076,432, of whom 3,104,821 were males, and 2,971,611 females. In Tasmania and Victoria females predominated. The increase for the year was 118,512. New South Wales increased by 49,575, Victoria 26,571, Queensland 21,860, South Australia 15,807, the other States showed small increases. Since the 1921 census Australia’s population has increased by 640,698, of whom 70 per cent, are due to the excess of births over deaths, and 30 per cent, to the excess of arrivals over departures. The increase represents an average rate slightly above two per cent, per annum.
