SONG OF MELBOURNE MATCH. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Melbourne, Dec. 30. The poetical critic of the Daily Telegraph, commenting on the Melbourne match, says: ‘We howled for new blood and got it; The issue is justified quite, But what is has • shown is that, given the chance, The experienced old birds still can smite.” BIG CRICKET SCORES. THE VICTORIAN RECORD. The Daily Telegraph states: “The efforts of England in amassing huge scores are completely overshadowed by Victoria’s record total. Nobody who has witnessed the putting together of these mammoth totals will grade the Australians’ pre-eminence in this direction. When batting masters bowling so pronouncedly in a couple of days the game becomes a tiresome business. It is fervently to be hoped that the performance in Melbourne will not arouse a spirit of emulation in the breasts of English players. The most refreshing feature of the record is that the score was made in 101 hours, but there is something appalling in making a century hourly for ten hours.” ENGLISH TEAM IN INDIA. Calcutta, Dee. 29. Marylebonc scored their sixth victory in India, defeating the Europeans in the East by an innings and 55 runs. The Europeans, in the first innings, made 146 (Johnstone 35). Marylebonc, in their first innings, made 326 (.Sandham 112, Astill 41, Earle 41). In their second innings the Europeans made 125 (Guise 49). Boyes took seven wickets for 5'2. NORTH TARANAKI v. NOMADS. A match of considerable interest, which is certain to prove a good game, will be played at Pukekura Park, commencing on Wednesday next at 11 a.m., between a North Taranaki team and the touring team of Nomads. The latter includes a number of well-known cricketers of the Wanganui, .Rangitikei and Manawatu districts, among whom are Bernau and Orton, who played in the recent Hawke Cup match. North Taranaki will have a good side, though the absence of Kingston and Clarke will leave the team below the real strength of the district. The match will extend over two davs.
