ON THE TENNIS COURTS

TOURNEY AT HAWERA. CONCLUDING DAY’S PLAY. The Hawera Lawn Tennis 9 and Croquet Club’s annual tennis tournament concluded at the Hawera club’s courts yesterday, after a four days’ season during which splendid weather - prevailed and the courts were in first-class order. Once again the tournament has been a huge success and visiting players have been more than delighted with their stay in Hawera, and with the splendid condition and situation of the courts. Each day of the tournament lias seen large numbers of interested onlookers, and everything has gone off smoothly. The success achieved is largely due to such untiring and efficient workers and organisers as Messrs J. M. Collins, president of the club, Mr. R. Jones, secretary, R. H. Lee'ee and especially Mr. F. ■I. Bilton, the assistant secretary, who was unrlaubtedly the hardest worked official at sie tournament. Amongst the ladies, ’Mrs. C. J. Bilton, with many willing assistants, had charge of the luncheon and refreshment arrangements and gave every satisfaction in this department. The standard of play throughout the tourney was high, and during the last two days some sparkling contests were staged, the outstanding match being the defeat of Torrens and Wills in the final for the men's championship doubles by the veterans, S. and A. Powdrell, after a determined tussle. The match, which commenced early on Wednesday afternoon, did not finish until about 7.30, and was witnessed by a large gallery. Great interest was aroused by the projected meeting of S. Powdrell (Wanganui) and Rhodes Williams (Wellington), set down for yesterday in the final for the men’s championship singles, but this struggle did not take place since Powdrell scratched for health reasons. ’For some time he has been under the doctor, and after the incessant demand on him on Wednesday, which would have tired a much younger man, he did not feel disposed to compete. The match, had it been staged, would have been well worth seeing, and would have resolved itself into a contest of youth and dash (Rhodes Williams is only about 20 years of age) against experience. The club was extremely fortunate to have such fine weather during the tournament. and the splendid manner in which the courts stood np to the constant use was a tribute to the work of the grounds committee. x/uring the afternoon the president o. the club addressed the gathering and announced the winners of the various events. The presentation of trophies to the winners was made by Mrs. Payne. THE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS.
