If I were dear old Santa Claus, I don’t know what I’d do! I couldn’t cover all those miles, And fill the stockings too! I’d never manage in a sleigh To journey round the earth, From London Town to Labrador, From Panama to Perth! Then what a memory he must have] I really do not know How he can recollect just where Each Christmas gift must go! Such lots of boys are much alike, And so are many girls; Just think of all the mental notes The straight-locks and the curls!
Just think of all the mental notes That Santa Claus must make! No wonder every now and then There’s just a slight mistake In reading al! those messages Marked “Urgent” and “Express”! Besides, you know, the chimney mail Its always, more or less. Exposed- to risks of falling soot, Or letters may be stolen by A chimney jackdaw bird! No wonder even Santa Claus Is sometimes in a fix, And leaves a dressed-up dolly where They'd begged for coloured bricks
No wonder he’s so bent and bowed Beneath his giant sack, That keeps him busy all the year, • So long it takes to pack! No wonder that hie flowing beard Has grown so snowy white! (I’ve even heard it turned like that Within a single night!) So though I sometimes think I’d low* To travel in his sleigh, With all those jolly tinkling bells To cheer me on my way— I guess I’d grow too mortal tired Remembering all those names, And sorting out ten millions gifts In separate toys and games! And worst of all, I’d get so mixed, With chimney entrance doors, The children very soon would know ! 1 wasn’t Santa Claus. —Helen Sevrez.
