TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Acceptances for the Taranaki, Auckland and Dunedin meetings close on Friday. * * * * A Wanganui writer states that Civility will race at Awapuni on Boxing Day; not at Ellerslie. * * * • Mr. A. A. McKenzie’s mares, Clarinda and Piuthair, are so favourably treated in the Auckland Cup that it is more than likelv that both will be sent to Ellerslie. * * * * Talisker did not show his true form at Trentham in the spring, but, worked the reverse way at Woodville, he has shown great form, and may make his presence felt at the Auckland meeting. * * * * Mr. C. McKay has entered his new purchase, Alaric, in the Braeburn Handicap (gentlemen riders) at Waipukurau on Boxing Day. Later on, Alaric will probably be put over country. * * * * Mr. S. Wotton continues his run of successes on the English Turf, and up to October 12 had won 72 races with 36 different horses, and stakes totalling £16,430. Wootton goes for “the small goods,” but is reputed to be a big better. The previous year he won 59 races, and £14,808 in stakes. The crack American three-year-old, Bubbling Over (North Star IH—Beaming Beauty) went amiss after winning the Kentucky Derby, and has been sent to the stud, where his list for next season at a fee of £2OO is already full. Bubbling Over started thirteen times, and was never out of a place, while his stake-winnings aggregated £15,710. * » • • The fact that Coronach has won £39,624 in stakes this season placed Hurry On at the head of the winning English sires when the last mail left the Old Country. Colorado (£10,610) and Priscilla (£5602) materially helped Phalaris into second place on the list with £40,024. There was a good drop to Buchan, £27,063, of which Short Story won £8485. Then followed Gainsborough £23,675, Son-in-Law £21,645, Gay Crusander £17,482, Swynford £15,313, and The Tetrach £13,141. Progeny of The Tetrach, Tetratema, sired winners of £10,544. # * * • “Binocular,” in the Manawatu Standard, pens the following:—"The desirability for stable companions, but not the property of the one owner, being coupled on the machine has been stressed on numerous occasions. While the practice is in force in the light harness branch, it has not yet been adopted by the galloping authorities. At the Feilding and Woodville meetings the public was set some conundrums in connection with Epistle and Royal Damon from H. Hickey’s Hastings stable. On the opening day Epistle was preferred to Royal Damon and the former ran second and the latter fourth. Contrary to early expectations, Epistle was scratched on the morning of the second day and Royal Damon won. At Woodville they both figured in the sprint the first day but Epistle was again scratched and on the strength of his Feilding showing Royal Damon was installed favourite only to run unplaced after being left on the mark. With Epistle also in on the second day the public installed the Polydamon mare second favourite with Royal Damon sixth in the betting order. Epistle ran unplaced while Royal Damon, after making a great effort to secure the honours, had to be content with second monev.

MANAWATU MEETING. ACCEPTANCES CLOSE TO-NIGHT. A final reminder is given to horseowners and trainers that acceptances for the first day’s events at the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting, also final payments for the Palmerston Stakes, close this evening at 9 p.m. The official organ of racing in New Zealand erroneously gave the closing date as December 21, and Mr. J. M. Johnston, secretary, particularly wishes those interested to note that Wednesday, December 15, is the correct closing date. Splendid entries were received for the various well-endowed races at the meeting, and Mr. J. E. Henry’s adjustments should draw big acceptances. The course at Awapuni is in perfect order, and the usual officials will be in their places on Boxing Day, viz., starter, Mr. W. C. Price; judge, Mr. J. R. L. Stanford. The energetic secretary, Mr. J. M. Johnston, and his capable staff have everything in readiness for the meeting, which promises to be a huge success. TARANAKI WEIGHTS. The weights for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s summer meeting appeared on Monday and appear to have given general satisfaction. With Te Monanui among the nominations the handicapper had no trouble in finding the top weight in the Christmas Handicap, and with Kist 21b Mrs. Graham’s horse could not be considered harshly treated, but the good son of Potoa will be a runner in the Auckland Cup on the same day. If the present weather continues, Income, with 9st 81b, may be very hard to dispose of. Tresham and Hipo, with Bst 7ib and Sst 41b have both been running well rtf late, but on last year’s form Bright Day with Bst 31b is well in tho handicaps, even though he is better suited by welter weights. The two Bisognes, Monaghan and Glengariff, are partial to a distance, and the former especially has been showing good form of late, and provided H at he trains on well will probably start favourite. Scat showed fair for last autumn, but has done nothing so far this season. Killock would be dangerous with 7st 41b on a wet track and Bonhomme on the same mark will command respect on the day. Royal Mint looks well on the 7st mark. Summed up Tresham, Bright Day, Monaghan and Royal Mint would appear to bear watching. The Flying Handicap finds the consistent First Aero at the top, conceding 3lbs to Merry Jest and Pelham. Merry Jest was worked the reverse way yesterday, and will probably go to Ellerslie. Pelham has done nothing so far this season but at his best is a good sprinter. Monaghan with Sst 91b would appear to have his full share of weight, but The Lamb at Bst 41b should hold him safe. Pouma, Gaillard, Eh Timi and Papaponga and Oration all appear well treated, but Areh Ami and Te Koroke ean both go fast, and at present this race bears a very open appearance.

For 4 horse that has only won one race in his career Mint Loaf has got full deserts with 9st 31b in the Atiawa Hack Cup. Lady Anstruther has shown such good form this year that with Sat 101 b she is favourably treated, especially in comparison with the top weight. Subjection has his full, share with Sst 91b and Royal Mint on the same mark should hold him safe. Pop Off may not have many friends after his Woodville failures, but may prove that form all wrong. No Response has not shown form of but likes the track. Most of the others have to be taken on trust, especially over a distance, but the material is there for a really good contest, and though Lady Anstruther ami Royal Mint show best form at present there is plenty of room for a surprise NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK WORK. Owing to the heavy state of tho ground all the work yesterday morning was done on the outside of the course proper. Royal Mint and Hipo went seven fuilongs, the last six taking Imin 23sec. Miss Mercia by herself was not asked to do her best over five furlongs. Merry Jest and Oration worked tho reverse way. Oration fell near the six furlong posit, but neither horse nor rider (J. George) was hurt. Flying Shot was too good for Roburant over six furlongs. Lncernal and Crossfire went six furlongs, the last five taking Imln llscc. Jazz Baby and Breezy went half amile. Tawehi, Closefire and another took ]min 2-ssec for six furlongs.

Quilfire and Orcades took 42s«en foi three furlong*. Anolo and a companion went four furlongs in 54secs. Vivo and Fire Brigade went six furlongs in Jmin 24secs. Papaponga and The Swell were sent onee round at three-quarter paee.
