COMMUNITY CLUB

ENTERTAINMENT FOR CADETS. For the past six years an energetic band of ladies of New Plymouth have interested themselves in the well-being of the cadets by providing them with supper and a short entertainment on each parade night. They call themselves the “Community Club,” and incorporate the Cadet Club, whose activities consist of mountaineering, cricket, football, etc. Their enterprise and zeal are greatly appreciated by the cadets ana the Defence Department, who realise the benefits which must naturally result from such a club, of which that in Wellington is the only other of its kind in New Zealand. On the occasion of the final parade of the year last night, it was decided to provide a fitting entertainment. No audience could have been more appreciative of the efforts of the entertainers than the two hundred odd boys last night, and each and every item was enthusiastically encored. Items were given as follows: Songs, Mrs. MacDonald and Misses Foote and Home (with violin obligato by Mr. W. A. Brodie), Mr. Lealand and Lieutenant Sillitoet elocutionary items, Mrs. Kircher; Instrumental quartette, Miss E. Baily and Messrs. T. C. Fookes, J. I’enny and W. A. Brodie. Miss E. Horner played piano solos and the accompaniments. During the evening Mr. McClune referred to the success of the cricket team, which had acquitted itself well during the season, and expressed the hope that they would be able to obtain funds to enable the team to enter the junior cricket competition next season. Lieutenant Ainsworth, on behalf of the cadets, thanked the Community Club for what they had done and also the performers for their entertainment. He made special mention of the work of Mrs. Le May who, he said, was responsible for the night’s entertainment, and bad always had the interests of the cadets at heart. He then called for cheers for the club and the entertainers. Members of the club this year are: — Mesdames Le May, Waterston, Brodie, Day, Bullock, T. Fookes, Stevens, Bell, Kircher, A. Thompson, Hare, Greig, Morgan, Climie and Miss Harker. Former members were: Mesdames Neal, Balharry, Griffiths, List, J. Cook and Nisbet Smith.
