BOVS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

REARING OF CALVES CHAMPIONSHIPS SELECTED. KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED. The championship judging for the South Taranaki calf-rearing competitions took place yesterday at Eltham, when a particularly good yarding of calves were arrayed before the judges. The original programme to meet at the saleyards had to be abandoned, owing to the phenomenal downpour of rain. Nevertheless a surprisingly good muster came forward. In the Jersey class 23 out of 26 came forward to the judging stage and 18 out of 23 in the Friesian class. By the courtesy of Mr. W. G. Crozier, who loaned the Coronation Stables for the convenience of the judges, the calves were all taken there, and they made a great spectacle as they were led by their keepers along Bridge Street. The accommodation in the spacious stables was taxed, and great interest was taken by parents, friends and townspeople alike. The final selection was made from the winners of the eight groups previously judged. Chart points previously allowed were added to the judges’ points for condition, the total figures constituting the championship. A special prize (gold medal donated by Mr. W. McL. Dowie, Matapu) for the best dairy type in the ShorthornFriesian class, was won by J. Johnson, Hawera. A special medal was also donated by the Hon. O. J. Hawkcn on dairy type in the Jersey-Ayrshire class, and was won by E. Shearon, Auroa. Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., in presenting the medals and cash prizes, apologised for the absence of the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Mr. E. Walter, M.P., and Mr. M. C. Crighton. He paid a tribute to the young farmers for their very fine showing. The movement had grown during the past few years. Out of 283 entries, 242 had come forward to be judged as against 177 entries and 155 judged last year. He advised the children to continue with their work, and not to be discouraged because of not winning. At the conclusion of the judging, Mr. E. K. Cameron, the secretary, in thanking the members of the Farmers’ Union, the judges, Messrs. Syme and Glasson (Department of Agriculture), said he was pleased to see so many taking such a keen interest in the work. They were appreciative of the great amount of work these people had put into the competitions. A hearty vote of thanks for the services of those mentioned and also for the use of the building was carried by acclamation. In the rearing competitions (JerseyAyrshire class) the championship was won by L. Brown, Douglas, with a total of 127 points, comprising 27 for chart and 100 for condition. The calf was born on August 17, fed on new milk, whey, and meal, and the total cost of rearing was £1 12s 3ld. The judges were Messrs. W. A. Jenkins (Eltham), L. S. Barraclough (Hawera) and A. T. Wills (Hawera), while Mr. F. Hoskin, of Matapu, judged on dairy type. Commenting on the entries, the judges were unanimous in their praise of tho very fine yarding placed before them. They were a good, even lot and the first four placings were very hard to separate. It was a pity, they said, it had rained so heavily, as they had looked forward to the championship, judging which would have been a much more sspeetacular display out in the open. The winning Shorthorn-Friesian calf entered by J. Foreman, was born on August 30, and was fed on new milk, new milk and water, and meal. The eost of rearing was £2 15s 6d. The result of the judging was as follows: CHAMPIONSHIP. Jersey-Ayrshire Class.
