Mr. Roy Holme®, of the Opunake branch of the P. and T. Department, lias been promoted to the Wanganui branch, and Mr. Jones, of the Kapongai branch, promoted to Opunake. Mr. Cecil Wille, who has been on ihij staff of Newton King, Ltd., for comi| years, has joined the staff of.-Wrighfy Stephenson and Co., Ltd:, and left yeaterday morning for Wellington. leaving Mr. Wills was met by the staff and' Mr. Stanley Shaw presented him with a travelling mg as a memento of his association with the office. A Wellington message reports the death of Sjichard Harris, 39 years of age, after an operation for acute appendicitis. Deceased was a well known journalist, and was formerly on the staffs of the Hawke's Bay Herald and the Christchurch Sun. He was editor of the Returned Soldiers’ paper Quick March. A fine verse writer, Mr. Harris was once heralded a® another Victor, Daley. Latterly he had been employed as a copy writer by Messrs. Gordon and Gotch, Ltd.—Press Assn. The death has occurred of an exInglewood identity, Mr. W. Davie, who died on Friday last at the ago of 87, years. Deceased had been in Wanganui and Taranaki for many years, and was a Maori War veteran. He married Mis® Scanlon, his wife dying five years ago. After marrying, Mr. ami Mrs. Davis resided at Turakina, returning later to Inglewood. On the death of his wife, Mr. Davis went to live with his sons, who are farming at Mohakatino, and up to a few weeks ago enjoyed good health. Thq interment took place at the Inglewood cemetery on Sunday, many pioneers of the district asecro bling to pay their last respect® to the memory of the departed. Mrs. L. B. Grimstone, the widow of the late Mr. L. B. Grimstone, who wao for many years manager of the Bank, of New Zealand at Waitara and Eltham, died suddenly at New Plymouth on Monday evening. For four years Mrs. GrimetOßO was manager of the Brachurn Private Hotel, Wanganui, where she was well and favourably known. She had juslt arrived in New Plymouth to lake over phe control of the tearooms at the Taranaki Women’s Chib and on Saturday and Monday renewed many old friendships. She wae bright and cheer.ful, and apparently in the best of health, bnt during Monday evening she wa® overcome by a sudden illness and was removed to the hospital, where she died from cerebral haemorrhage. Mrs. Grimstone leaves two grown up daughters. Her son was killed during the war. With the death of Mr. Samuel Georgs Handley, Wanganui loses another of it® best known pioneers and residents. The late Mr. Handley was horn in 1853 at "Southern Grove,” Bapanui. In 1870, he married Mies Meriel Brown (the Rev. Basil Taylor officiating) at the Putiki Native Church, and afterwards took up his residence at Maxwelltown. He later carried on farming pursuits at Nukumaru, and became interested in district affaire, being a member of the Waitotara County Council for 28 years. The late Mr. Handley was also a director of the Wanganui Freezing Company for some years. About five years ago he left hie farming interests at Nukumaru io retire to hi® city residence on St. Jonh’® Hill. The late Mr. Handley saw service in the Maori War, and could retail many reminiscences of the tronblou® times with the hostile natives. At one time he was licensee of the Nukumaru Hotel, which stood on the old coach route north from Wanganui. The late Mr. Handley leaves a widow and five sone.
