TRANSMISSION OF NEWS

WIRELESS VERSUS CABLES. By Telegraph—Press Assn —Copyright. London, Dec. 7. A transcript has been issued of the Empire Press Union's deputation to the communications sub committee of the Imperial Conference on November 19. • Sir Robert Donald urged that the competition of speedier cables with 7 wireless would have to be considered. He understood that the company in a few years would have a quick loaded cable to Australia. He believed that a serious eut in cable rates was contemplated. Therefore, the Post Office, was faced with the dual problem of the competition of loaded cables with its obsolete Atlantic cables and the competition of its wireless against all cables. Mr. S. M. Bruce (Premier of Australia) intimated that Cabinet was considering the landing charges in Australia, under which there was the. anomaly that all cables were chargeable, bnt not all wireless. He admitted that cheaper dissemination of Empire news was essential. Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery (Secretary for the Dominions) promised sympathetic submission of the views to the Postmaster-General.
