The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce is in receipt of advice from the Railway Board that Sunday excursion trains from Hawera to New Plymouth will commence on December 5, and run on each Sunday thereafter during the summer months. The special excursion tickets issued will be available until the following Monday in each case. Representations were also made by the chamber that the board consider the advisability of issuing excursion tickets to the seaside on public holidays, and this matter, it is understood, is receiving consideration.

A ludicrous incident was witnessed when the steamer Kaitangata was about to leave Napier for Auckland on Tuesday evenijig. A belated member of the crew appeared reluctant to join the ship, and had to be taken on board by force. When the boat was steaming out, however, he jumped overboard and swam back to the pier, climbed the steps, and, dripping like a piece of seaweed, went up to a mate on the wharf and wished him good bye. Then he looked for the Kaitangata. Evidently his services were needed, for the vessel put back, ran out the gangway, and received again the man who had returned to say good-bye.

There were some inaccuracies in our report of Mr. J. S. Connett's remarks at the meeting of dairymen at New Plymouth on Friday. In connection with Mr. Wright’s appointment as London manager, Mr. Connett said that “Mr. Goodfellow took no part in the matter, but left it wholely in the hands of the remaining members of the board.” Also that “the promoters of the board always advocated a committee appointed by the board working with a committee appointed by the merchants for the purpose of agreeing on values, but never favoured Mr. Wright being given power to fix prices.” In a report furnished to a reliable publication the average cost of retailing butter for the past ten months had been 3Jd per lb, not 7jd as printed.

A good opportunity of securing new season’s clothes at cheap prices is being offered by Besley's, Ltd., who are giving a 19 per cent, cash discount on all purchases.

The Puritan is the name of a wonderful value line of Art Silk Stockings offering at the Melbourne, Ltd., at 5/11 pair. They are fully fashioned, and the silk reaches well over the knee, and there is a complete range of all colours. Another special is the fine quality fabric glove with pretty silk embroidered cuff at 3/6 pair in all shades.

Attention is drawn in our advertising columns to the farewell social to Mr. and Mrs. Street, to be held in the Hempton Hall, Okato to-night (Monday, 29). An excellent programme has been arranged for the concert to be held in the Empire Theatre to-morrow evening. The best of talent in New Plymouth has been engaged, as well as artists from Stratford and other parts of Taranaki, and an enjoyable evening is assured. Box plans are at Collier's. The monthly choral service was held last evening in the Baptist Church. The minister, the Rev. F. A. Parry, preached to a good congregation from the sth word from the Cross, “I thirst.” S[>ecial anthems were rendered by a large choir and orchestra. Miss Campbell and Mr. Hgginson sang a duet and Mrs. J. sang a solo. Miss Coleman presided at the organ.
