(By “Moturoa.”) The Ashhurst Racing Club was favoured with glorious weather on Wednesday for the annual meeting, and although the railway hold-up in the Manawatu Gorge affected the attendance of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa sportsmen, there was a good crowd present, the army of cars and. charabancs in the enclosures being a sight to see. The course was in fine order, and racing good, while a run of seven first favourites winning, helped the totalisator returns, and sent the crowd home in good frame of mind. Recent form was good to follow, Kilmezzo, Cerf, Monaghan and Bonhomme winning again, while Kilfaire, White Ringlet and Blood Red have performed promisingly of late, and their successes were fully anticipated. The only thing in the nature of a mild surprise was the runaway victory of Bonideer in the Pohangina Handicap, but a couple of placed performances this season prepared many punters for her success. The improvements to the stewards’ stand and enlarged Press room were favourably commented on. As usual, the popular president, Mr. R. MacDonald, and the other officials of the club made visitors welcome, and the secretary, Mr. A. W. Trass, kept everything moving smoothly and expeditiously. Mr. O’Connor had some fractious horses to contend with, but effected good starts. The Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, was present and presented the cup to Mrs, W. H. Gaisford (in the absence of Mr. Gaisford). The tote turnover was only about £4t)o below last year’s aggregate, which was very satisfactory considering the present shortage of money. There were several inquiries during the afternoon, but the judicial committee found no need to ■‘bring in the axe.” « « * « The withdrawal of Killoch from the Hack Hurdles robbed that event of much interest, but a good, even field (91bs. separating top and bottom weights) paraded, and the public picked the winner, Blood Red, mainly owing to the fact that Alan McDonald had the mount—no doubt. The field bunched before turning for home, and the favourite then drew out and won decisively. Polyastra might have been in the money but for hitting the second last fence, Lord making a good recovery, but the Polydamc.ii gehliug had no chance of beating Blood Red. * Fortunately, four course scratchings reduced the Maiden to a single division, and again the public picked them correctly, White Ringlet (Trillo) and Miss Pat (11. Reed) always being in front, and crossing the line separated by only a head. White Ringlet’s form recently suggested her as the likely winner, and, for a first favourite, she returnued a good price. Miss Pat stood at the post better than usual, and Reed had no difficulty in jumping her out with the first bunch. * * * « Despite rumours to the contrary. Gold Box took his place in the Pohangina Handicap, but the public preferred the. chances of Polyphemus, Bonideer beiitg third in demand. The last-named got. the best of the start and was never headed. Gold Box was always second, and bung on long enough to return his backers the bulk of their money. Polyphemus could not handle the turns, and

Penman got away too badly to have a chance. Taranaki admirers of Jazz Baby were, in the writer’s opinion, fortunate to get a divided first dividend when the Tea Tray colt dead-heated with Kilmezzo at Levin, and Ashhurst running strengthens that idea. Kilmezzo was served up at about “eveiis” in the Komako Hack Handicap on Wednesday, and never left the issue in doubt. Lin Arlington, the second favourite, did not begin smartly, but was rushed past several horses on the. bends, eavering a lot of ground, which left him without a run at the finish. He may do better on a'less tricky course. Merle 'stayed on better than usual, and Petal also finished well. * * * • the Cup was a good betting race, Kilfaire, Killocra and Nukumai being Confidently supported. Kilfaire was well handled by Green, and although Nukumai was finishing best, the Kilbroney gelding just gained the verdict. Killocra was in the limelight to the turn, but then faded out. Road Hog was close behind Killocra, running a really good race. « * * • Odds were laid on Cerf in the Siberia Hack Handicap, and the. Royal Stag colt never gave his backers a moment’s anxiety, leading all the way and winning like a good one from the useful Addlepate, who paid a fair price. Starboard Light shaped much better than he did at° Levin, but Royal Land covered a lot of ground in getting into fourth berth. Horomea did not appear to be ready. • # • • Another very warm favourite, Monaghan, prevailed in the Raumai Handicap. He did not begin promisingly, but France quickly had him with the leaders, and, making use of his light weight, came away below the distance to win well from Arataura, who was always in the picture. Prince Hal ran his usual good race at Ashhurst. The winner carried Gibs, overweight, which will not help him in forthcoming handicaps. • # * * With Roy Reed up, Bonhomme was sorted out as the best of good things in the concluding event, and. the Panmure gelding won nicely from a very poor crowd. This is the second race which Bonhomme has won since joining “Dug.” Webster’s team. . * * * * Amongst the jocksters there were no double winners at the meeting, though Roy Reed rode a first, second and a third. P. Burgess scored a first and. a second, and. T. Green a first and a third. # 45= * * A. Goodman (Trentham) led in.three winners, and other successful trainers were: J. Morris (Bulls), F. C. McKay (Feilding), J. Sullivan (Woodville), J. Thacker (Stratford), and D. Webster (Otaki). * * * * Winning owners. —W. H. Gaisford £225 (including Cup valued £5O), A. and W. Keay £135, T.
