A bodyguard of two dozen stalwart undergraduates, wearing dungarees, silk hats and monocles, escorted Sir Austen Chamberlain from the station at Glasgow for his installation as Lord Rector of the University. Thousands of students outside the station gave Sir Austen a vociferous welcome, and when he entered the open carriage the horses were taken out and the students dragged the carriage three miles to the University, accompanied by two thousand torch-bearers.
