Simmonds, this sum being the balance on an account for the supply of shingle. Simmonds made the final payment, less £lO, to Sheerin’s agent, who denied accepting this as full payment, as defendant claimed he did. Costs amounting to £3 8s were allowed plaintiff. The defended civil case in which J. I. Jones claimed £8 10s, the value of A cow, from D. Graham, was further adjourned after Wilfred Herbert had given evidence. The Magistrate, in convicting I. JBridger and ordering him to pay costs (225) for employing a boy under 16 years of age without the required certificate of fitness, said it must be understood. that in every case where a business is classified as a factory, the persons working there must be imployed in accordance with the terms of the Factories Act. John Roy Penniall was ordered to pay his wife, Doris C. Penniall, maintenance amounting to 30s weekly for herself and child aged 3% years. Costs (£2 2s) were allowed complainant. Expert evidence was taken on the state of one of the wheels and the spokes of the car which the police allege was driven by O. N. Thomas in a manner and at a speed dangerous to the public. The case, which had been partly heard at a former sitting, arose out of an accident at the corner of Anderson Road and the Mountain Road on the evening of July 3. The case was further adjourned and will probably be concluded at a special sitting on Monday uext.s GIRL GUIDE ACTIVITIES. The report presented to the first monthly meeting of the Girl Guides committee last night by the captain, Mrs. R- B. Foord, was as follows: The local company of guides had been working well during the month, the guides showing a keen interest in their various subjects. They had 20 guides and brownies on the roll. On Labour Day the tennis season was opened, although, owing to the inclement weather, a large number of girls had made other arrangements previously and so were sorry to have had to miss the first day’s games. However, it was hoped to get plenty of fun and exercise throughout the present season. On Monday, October 11, a meeting of the Taranaki Provincial Committee took place in New Plymouth at which the local captain represented Eltham. It was decided that each district contribute £1 annually to New Plymouth, and New Plymouth contribute £2 annually to support the work and the expenses of the provincial secretary, as most of the orders had to go through her hands, thus incurring the extra expense. A monthly order is to be made up and be in New Plymouth by the 12th of each month. This was to minimise the provincial secretary’s work as much as possible. The captain would be glad if the committee would arrange examiners for the proficiency badges as the girls would soon be'ready to pass the necessary tests. The following badge examiners were appointed when the report had been adopted: Red Cross, Mrs. J. I. R. Gray; cooking, Mrs. Peacock; needlework. Mrs. Fake; laundry, Mrs. Goldsmith; housework, Mrs. D. McCready; knitting, Mrs. S. E. Carson; dancing, Mrs. Wylds. It was decided to ask Mrs. de Launay to act as secretary of the committee.
