Mr. J. K. Lomas left by the mail train yesterday for Wellington, where his mother is seriously ill. The death is reported, in Paris, of Colonel Delport, an artillery expert and the designer of the famous French seventyfive gun. —Press Assn. Bishop West Watson, of Christchurch, arrived in Hokitika last evening to lay the foundation stone of a new memorial church in that town.—Press Assn. Mr. A. Alexander left by the mail train yesterday morning for Palmerston North, where he will act as judge in the draught horse section at the show. Mr. William Frederick Thompson, Government valuer for the North Auckland district for the past 20 years, died suddenly on Monday night, a Press Assn, telegram from Whangarei reports. The Auckland Presbytery has nominated the Rev. G. Budd, superintendent of Home Missions, as Moderator of the New Zealand General Assembly. Mr. Budd has already been nominated by the North Auckland Presbytery. —Press Assn. The harbourmaster, Captain W. Waller, who has been laid up for the past week or two through injuries to his ankle received while berthing an overseas steamer, is progressing favourably, but will not be able to return to his duties for som* little time.
