MANAWATU SHOW

RESULTS OF PIG CLASSES CHAMPIONSHIPS TO MANAWATU. SOME TARANAKI SUCCESSES. (By Wire —Special Reporter.) Palmerston N., Last Night. Possibly- owing to the near approach of the Egmont and Stratford shows, as well as to the fact that the province is making big preparations to be represented at the Royal Show in Auckland this month, Taranaki stock are conspicuous by their absence at the Manawatu Metropolitan A. and P. Association’s forty-first annual show, which opened in ideal spring weather to-day. Nevertheless, the entiles are particularly good, the Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Manawatu and Wellington districts being well represented. The entries as a whole show a decided increase, totalling 3314, as against 2907 last year. Horses total 245 compared with 204 last y-ear; cattle 312 (297); sheep 476 (435); and pigs 71 (50). Judging in the pig section was completed to-day, Mr. W. B. Grant, of New Plymouth, judging in the Berkshires. The Central Development Farm (Weraroa) took the championship for boars and obtained the reserve in sows. Mr. J. A. Russell (Palmerston) took the championship for sows and reserve for boars, and with Mr. E. P. Neilson took most of the prizes. Mr. J. A. Russell secured all the championships, and Mr. E. P. Neilson the reserves in Tamworths. H. Ashworth (Palmerston) most in the Large White; and the Central Development Farm and E. P. Neilson in the Large Black. Baconers and porkers produced great competition, and some fine pigs were shown. The cattle classes will be judged tomorrow. Jerseys appear to be the strongest, but there is great competition in Fricsians and Ayrshires, whilst the Milking Shorthorn classes, of which Mr. J. C. Wright, of Matapu, is the judge, have also filled well. As usual, the beef classes arc strong, including Shorthorn, Hereford and Aberdeen Angus. The photography and needlework sections were judged to-day. In photography for amateurs, Mr. J. D. Hay (New Plymouth) receives three firsts for animal life, New Zealand landscape and seascape and marine, and a third for any study. In needlework, Mrs. C. Woodham (New Plymouth) secures two firsts and a third, and Mrs.'G. Lawson (FrankleyRoad) two seconds.
