FREEZING WORKS IDLE
POSITION AT HASTINGS NO APPLICATION FOR WORK. DISPUTE’S SERIOUS EFFECT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, Nov. 1. A meeting of freezing workers was held yesterday to discuss going to work this morning at the commencement of the season’s operations, but no amending resolution to that .carried at a previous meeting, not to apply for work, would be received, as a notice of motion is necessary for consideration by another meeting. It is stated that efforts are being made to prevent the holding of another meeting, on the ground that the matter has gone out of the workers’ control and is now in the hands of the Alliance of Labour, but as a large majority at yesterday’s meeting was ready to go to work, they will not be disposed to take this lying down. Conditions at the works this morning were very quiet. There was practically no application for work, although the regular maintenance hands came on as usual. No picketing was observable. The trouble comes at a very critical time. Farmers who want to lighten their holdings of fats face dry weather and poor markets.
