The death is reported, at Detroit (Ohio), of Hany Houdini, the world famous magician at the age of fortytwo years.—Press Assn. Mr. A- C. Matheson has tendered hi* resignation of the position of manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Dunedin, on account of his not having recovered from thg effects of an accident six months ago. Mr. Joe Thomal, the retired bantamweight champion of Australia, and wellknown in Taranaki, has been in Naw I’lymoutG over the week-end as a member of the “White Cargo’ company, in which lie plays the part of the native. Dr. .1. Hight, professor of history and dean of the faculty of commerce at Canterbury College, has resigned in order t* take up a position for a year on the professional staff of Leeds University. Mr. David S. Thompson, acting manager of the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the past two year*, ha* been appointed manager of the Sydney branch of the bank, and will leave Wellington to take up his new position in about three weeks. Mr. D. F. Reid, late manager of the Palmerston North'' branch of the bank, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Thompson. Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, and president of the Hospitals Association, arrived in New Plymouth from Te Kuiti on Saturday and spent the week-end in New Plymouth. Mr. Wallace was naturally interested in hospital matters, and he made a special point of visiting the New Plymouth hospital, over which he was conducted by Mr. M. Fraser, chairman. He was impressed with the institution and particularly delighted with its situation, as he was also with the aspect of the town itself. He agreed that the finest view in New Plymouth was to be had from the ground* of the hospitalThe death occurred in New Plymouth last night of the late Mr. VVifiiam Bocock, a colonist of 50 year*’ standing. Born in Lincolnshire, the late Mn Bocock came to Taranaki in 1875. He took up a farm at Omata, and subsequently another one at Egmont \ Hinge retiring from the latter about 16 year* ago to take up his residence in New Plymouth. He was at one time chairman of the Waiwakaiho Road Board, and a director of tho Mangorei Dairy Company, and since his retirement has acted as steward for the agricultural and winter eh#ws. During his long residence in the Dominion the late Mr. Bocock has been a prominent member of the Methodist Church, in which ho was a local preacher for many years. H* leaves a widow jnd a family of four sons and one daughter.
