THORNTON ELEVEN MATCH. KO DEFINITE DECISION. JTIE TOURISTS ALL OUT FOR 194. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 10. The match Australia v. Thornton's XI was drawn. The attendance was 6000. Rhodes and Gilligan kept the early batsmen on the defensive. Gilligan was not actually dangerous and the lack of foothold converted him into a comparatively elow howler. Woodfull scored mostly by off drives, one of whieh, after 85 minutes’ sound orthodox play, was well held low by Hobbs. Macartney displayed a partiality for Stevens, pulling him superbly, but Jupp completely beat him. The board read 99 for four. The wicket became almost a gluepot, giving the batsmen an anxious time. Jupp was specially effective with a big off break. The fifth wicket partnership between Taylor and Andrews was an attractive display. Both indulged in big hits till the total reached 154, when Taylor was out in attempting to turn Rhodes.

Gregory played his usual vigorous game, compiling his 19 in ten minutes, and was then stumped. The remaining batsmen gave Andrews little assistance. He was always sound and confident and allowed admirable skill on the leg side. He was in 95 minutes. With 75 minutes left Thornton’s men made an uninspiring start. Gilligan had a short and lively stay, driving to the on and off powerfully. Sutcliffe was slow at the start. He and Tyldesley played out time in the best test match style. Both made merry at the expense of Collins, off whom 22 were knocked up in three overs. . The scores were: — THORNTON’S TEAM. First Innings 244 Second Innings.
