OAKURA CYCLE RACE.

TIPPENS WINS COMFORTABLY. S. McC'ANN MAKES RECORD TIME. C. Tippens, a junior cycle rider, signalised his first appearance in senior events on Saturday by winning fairly comfortably the New Plymouth League Cycle Club’s race of I3J miles to Oakura and back. This was the sixth of a series of eight races and was ridden under excellent conditions. Riding from scratch, Sid McCann (35min. 57 4-ssec.) and R. Johnstone (35min. 59see.), both completed the distance in record times, the previous best being that of A. Gable, 36min. 40see., established in 1924. Results were as follow: C. Tippens (3min. 20sec.), 38min. 55 4-ssec 1 C. Hellier (Imin. losee.), 37miu. 9 4-ssec. 2 A. Putt (Imin. 45see.), 37min. 47sec. 3 S. McCann (scratch), 35min. 57 4-5 J. Cross (45sec.), 36min. 43 2-ssec. 5 R. Johnstone (scratch), 35min. 59sec. 6 J. Campbell (3min. 20sec.), 39min. 21 4-ssec. ‘ Thirteen starters. Though riding well in second place when returning home, E. Knofflock went back about four miles from the end of the race, and Campbell also lost a good deal of ground through trouble with the strap of a pedal. The four limit riders, Tippens, Knofflock, Campbell and MeKew, led at the turn from Hellier, Putt, Peel and George, the two sets of fourbeing bunched. Then came Cross and Yardley, while Johnstone, McCann and Brewster turned together. Five miles from home Tippens was leading, closely followed by Knofflock, then Campbell and McKew. Hellier and Putt, riding well together, were next, making up" ground fast. Cross, McCann and Johnstone were next, and gaining at a fast pace. At this stage of the race Knofflock fell. Tippens won by about 150 yards, Hellier beating Putt in a sprint for second place. McCann, Cross and Johnstone nearly overhauled the second and third riders, and finished 20 or 30 yards behind. These three riders finished in the order named, a length separating them each way. The cup points now stand: C. Hellier 11 points, A. Putt 8, J. Peel 7, S. MsCaun, W. Brewster 5, C. Tippens 4, G. Cavaney 3, N. Bellringer 2, Johnstone, George and Gable, 1 each. The next race will be held on Saturday, September 18, to Okato and back, 274 miles. A medal will be given to the winner, and the usual sweepstake is bein 5 added. Nominations close on Thursday.

RACING AT KAPONGA. (From Our Own Reporter.) Kaponga, Sept. 1!. Another cycle road race conducted by the Kaponga Cycle Club was held to-day over a 20-mile course. Several local riders made the mountain trip to-day as a test as to who would represent the club in the Timaru to Christchurch race. Considering the weather conditions, some good times, were made.
