GOVERNMENT RETURNS.
PROTEST EROM BUSINESS MEN
THEIR VALUE QUESTIONED.
“It is about time we made a protest against the increasing number of returns the Government is asking business people to make out,” said Mr. ’A. F. Sandford at the monthly meeting of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. A specitCl staff would soon be wanted to deal with the returns, and he suggested a remit on the matter should bo sent to the annual conference of the associated chambers. He eould not understand how the figures supplied by the business people could be of any value to the Government, for they were only approximate.
Mr. F. Hooker said it was absolutely ridiculous to ask business men to supply some of the information required by the authorities. Many of the answers could bo nothing but guesses in any ease. Mr. W. J. Penn said he had heard many complaints about the multiplicity and nature of the returns. At his suggestion it was decided to send a remit to the conference asking that the returns should be simplified so that their preparation would not be such a tax on the time of business men.
