GONDOLA FAIR.
SALVATION ARMY EFFORT. SUM OF £2OO IN SIGHT. The Gondola Fair, an effort by the Salvation Army in New Plymouth to obtain funds for their new barracks, came to a conclusion on Wednesday night, and though tho exact result of the effort cannot yet be estimated, it is probable that the amount netted will be little short of £2OO. The big event of Wednesday evening was the baby show, which attracted about 20 entries. The youthful competitors were sent out in fine condition and the judges, who were Miss B. A. Campbell (matron of the New Plymouth Hospital) and Mrs. D. Blackley, had an unenviable task in selecting the prizewinners. They expressed the opinion that, taken all round, the babies were a elean, healthy and well-nourished batch. The prizes were awanded as follow: —First, Mrs. Brabyn’s baby; second, Mrs. Stepton’s; third, Mrs. Hardy’s. Two special prizes were awarded to Mrs. Ashton's and Mrs. Cooke’s babies. The rest of the evening was devoted to fun for the children, and they enjoyed themselves to the utmost with tyre races, three-legged races, skipping, etc., and were genuinely sorry when the time came to leave. Shopping went on merrily during the evening, and as the stalls began to look rather bare towards tlie end, it eould be presumed that tlie various stallholders did a brisk trade
