NEW DOMINION STAMP.
DEFENCE OF THE ISSUE. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. ‘Wellington, Sept. 1. A writer on stamps defends the New Zealand 2s and 3s design, which was recently criticised in England, according to the cable news. He says there is no reason for withdrawing it, and the department lias no intention of doing so. The King is shown in naval uniform, in order to get away from the usual bald neck representation,- and it is a good likeness, in fact much the same as on the halfpenny stamp. It was drawn by Mr. Linley Richardson, an English artist, now the instructor at the Wellington Technical College. The border is a copy of an authentic Maori pattern, which probably carries no significance to English eyes.
(The cablegram said that the stamps would probably 'bo withdrawn tlihs become valuable, as the King’s likeSess was probably the worst that had ever appeared on a postage stamp.)
