HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Ply mouth Horticultural Society was held last night, Mr. L. Rea presiding over a fair attendance. In his report Mr. Rea stated that last year was not a particularly satisfactory one. As usual, two shows were held, a spring show in December and a chrysanthemum show in April. Both showed a small loss, and the result of the society's working for the year showed a total loss of £5 9s tid. It was appar ent that if the society was to continue to exist, some drastic move must made to obtain members’ subscriptions and new members if possible. Last year only 10(S members' subscriptions were received. It should bo possible for the society to have at leas 300 members. The present system ol collecting subscriptions was not satisfactory, and he thought they womd have to go back to the old method T’ dividing the list of members up among-' the committee. The society had suffered the loss of one of its old members in the person of Mr. E. B. Kingdon, a life member, who had done great work for very many years. They also deplored the loss of Mr. 11. R. Cattley, who had been the society’s auditor for many years. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of both these gentlemen. It was decided that the society's definition of a novice be one who has not previously gained a first prize at ar.' show in the section exhibited in. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. L. Rea; vice-presidents, Mcsdames R. Brewster, E. .1. Ellerm, A. Alexander, and Mr. L. N. Fairhall; committee, Mesdames J. D.
