FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS.

THE CHILDREN’S PRIZES.

The New Plymouth Fire Brigade held their thirty-sixth annual plain and fancy dress ball in the Coronation Hall last night. The hall was filled and the whole function was a brilliant success.

An outstanding feature of the gathering was the great number of children of all ages who attended in fancy drees. The floor, up to 9.30, was reserved for the children, and when the youngsters adjourned to supper the adult dancing commenced. The large annexes have greatly simplified the supper problem, and under the capable management of the ladies’ committee everything went off without a hitch.

The hall was beautifully decorated with flags of all sizes, with three large suspended ca.no.pys and coloured lights everywhere. The walls were decorated with ferns, palms and other native flora. The supper-room was gaily decked with red, white and blue streamers, and the tables, with their red flowers and autumn tints, reflected great credit on Mesdames A. Boon and Masters (Stratford), who set them out.

The judges of the costumes were Mesdames G. Home, D. Blackley and D. K. Morrison, and though nobody envied them their task they gave every satisfaction. At 9.15 Mr. A. Boon called on the Mayor to present the prizes. The prizes were awarded as follows: First, Mandy Walsh and Bernice Barker, as “ ’Awy and ’Arriet.” Second, boy, Harry Rosson (Zulu); girl, Joan Whittaker (Eastern Girl). Most Original.—Boy, Colin Cliff (Big Tree Benzine); girl, Ist, Muriel . Cox (Samples); 2nd, Dorothy Fincham (Chocolates); 3rd, Doris Richardson (Ice Cream). Paper class.—Gweneth Champion (Grape Vine).

Comic. —F. Doughty (Boy on Horse). Specials.—Royce Cox (Tiny Town); Jack Ibbotson (Toy Drum Major); Joan Healy (Good Luck Sign); Ronald Jones (Mephistopheles); Alan Cliff (Chef); Darcy Crone (Grey Butterfly); Clarence Sharp (France); Fred Ainsworth (Scarecrow) ; Sybil Courtney (Automobile Signs); Enid Humphries (Red Cross Nurse); Joan Frethey (Roses); Eric Bell (Cupid) ; Trevor O’Grady (Indian Squaw) ; Elsie Hamilton (Strawberry); Bob and Isabel Whitham (Pipes oi Pan); Frank Flannagan (Jockey); Joan Ford (Tourist Bureau); Elsie Courtney (Snowball), A large and energetic committee, with superintendant A. Boon as chairman and H. Ford as secretary, had made splendid arrangements and everything went with a. swing. A strong ladies’ committee, with the Mayoress (Mrs. F. E. Wilson) at the head, had the heavy and onerous task of handling the supper, but as usual, they were fully equal to the occasion. The music was provided by George’s Orchestra and was right up to their usual high standard.

. It is fully anticipated that from a financial aspect the function will compare favourably with other years.
