LECTURES TO FARMERS.
The A. and P. Society and the Department of Agriculture are to be congratulated upon the arrangements for the series of veterinary lectures which are to be given at various farms in Taranaki. There may be different opinions upon the organisation and work of the Agricultural Department as a whole, but so far as the Veterinary and Live -Stock Division are concerned the high tradition established now for many years is being maintained. It was that division which, first recognised the value of meeting the farmer and explaining to him the value of regulations and the assistance the department was willing to afford him in combatting the many ills which live stock are heir to. The fact that such teaching is still welcomed by the farmer is proof that it is worth while. It is to be hoped that the leaving of the details of the arrangements for these lectures to the farmers’ own societies is an indication that they will not be merely spasmodic interesting talks, but will be arranged in r series for each locality. Farmers will then have the opportunity near at hand Of seeing the outcome of advice given and experiments carried out, as applied to their own locality, and from the econo-mic-as well as from the scientific point of view, if indeed these terras are not really synonymous. Details for such courses of lectures would doubtless gladly be arranged -by the A. and P. Societies, which, moreover, would be in a position to know the subjects most likely to appeal to the farmers in each district. This would give some coherence to the work of the lecturers, and would stimulate interest amongst the settlers. Once such interest is aroused the success and the benefit of the lectures are assured. In the meantime it is to be hoped that the attendance at the lectures already arranged for will be such as to warrant further educational efforts on the part of the department.
