THE WAVERLEY RACES

UNDER WINTRY CONDITIONS.

EUPHONIUM WINS THE CUP.

WAIROA HANDICAP TO POUMA.

The Waverley Racing Club’s winter meeting was held yesterday under wintry conditions, a cold nor’-wester earlier in the day being followed by rain. This interfered with the attendance and the totalisator receipts. Racing, however, was interesting. The Patea Cup produced a field of ten, and was won by the Hawera-owned Euphonium, while the Stratford-owned Pouma accounted for a field of seven in the Wairoa Handicap.

GOOD RACING WITNESSED.

0 CLOSE FINISHES THROUGHOUT. TOTALISATOR SHOWS DECREASE. The Waverley Racing Club was unfortunate in the matter of weather for their winter meeting, which took place yesterday on the club’s course at Waverley. The boisterous weather of the preceding day or two interfered with the attendance, while a cold nor’-wester in the morning, which was succeeded by rain during the afternoon, made matters somewhat unpleasant, though prior to tlie seventh race the sun shone out again. All things considered, there was a very fair attendance, the sport submitted for the public’s delectation being thoroughly enjoyed. Fields throughout were good. Mr. A. Morse, at the barrier, sent his fields away well. Mr. H. Coyle, the handicapper, had brought his fields together very well, giving the judge a difficult task at times to sort out the placed horses, while Mr. E. V. Sutherland, in the judge’s box, came through the ordeal well. The course, which improved as the morning advanced, became holding later in the afternoon. The Cup provided a fine race. Ten of the twelve acceptors started, and a splendid finish saw the Hawera-trained Euphonium, who had always been prominent, win nicely from the locallyowned Opa. The open six, the Wairoa Handicap, went to that consistent Stratford mare, Pouma, with the New Plymouth horse, Willow Wai, second. The Haek Steeplechase saw a field of nine moderates face the starter, but only four finished, Velvet King and Pour! Hoiho falling, while Paul Moore, Objector and Rayo pulled up. None of the riders were injured. In fact, there was nothing to mar the day’s enjoyment. Mr. McMahon, the chief stipendiary steward, was present, but there were no inquiries. The races were run off well to time, the secretary, Mr. W, McFarlane, having made such complete arrangements that everything passed off like clockwork. The totalisator staff, under Mr. G. Spriggins, handled £11,992, as compared with £12,943 last year, a decrease of £951. The Queen Alexandra Band (Wanganui) rendered a splendid programme of music.

HOW THEY RAN

- KOAUAU WINS EASILY. The withdrawal of Mountain Bell left twelve in the Hack Hurdles, and in a poor betting race Kareao wound up favourite, carrying about 190 more tickets than Rehutai, who carried a similar number more than Koauau. Euchre was best backed of the others. Euchre was first to show out from Roman, but passing the stand Rehutai, Gold Peak and White Ranger were almost on terms with the leader. Gold Peak then was momentarily in the lead, but entering the back stretch Rehutai took command from Kareao and Euchre. Them was little alteration to the home turn, where Rehutai and Kareao were together in the van from Euchre, with Koauau moving up, followed by White Ranger. Rehutai and Kareao took the last obstacle on terms and looked like fighting out a good finish, but over the last bit Koauau came with a wet sail to win nicely by two lengths from Rehutai, with Kareao a length away third. White Ranger was two lengths further back, followed by Euchre, with Strongholt last. THE TRIAL TO PARTAGA. The sixteen carded started in the Trial Handicap, in which the public sorted out Acred as a hot favourite, this horse carrying nearly double as much as Partaga. Puawliato and Midnight Camp were the only ones fancied of the others. Midnight Camp was the first to show out from Turkish Fire, Glengarive, Erin-go-Bragh and Captain Gazeley, and this quartette made the running to the home turn, where Puawhato, Partaga and Acred were handy. Erin-go-Bragh moved to the front once the straight was entered, but in the run home Puawhato, Partaga and Acred joined issue, and a splendid finish saw Partaga gain the verdict from Erin-go-Bragh by half a length, with Acred half a length away third and Puawhato close up fourth. POUMA SCORES NICELY. The seven carded faced the barrierin the Wairoa Handicap. The public sent Bonogne out a good favourite, carrying about 120 tickets more than Pouma, the next in demand. Quillfire and Lady Bentinck were best backed of the others. Lady Bentinck and Willow Wai were quickest to show out from Bonogne and Papaponga. When the field settled down, Willow Wai was in the lead from Papaponga, but at the half-mile the latter was on terms with Willow Wai. The pair raced along together to the home turn from Pouma, md Bonogne. Papaponga had a slight

advantage when they turned for home, but once straightened up Pouma went to the front and won nicely by two lengths from Willow Wai, who just lasted long enough to stave off- Bonogne by a head. Quillfire was a length away fourth, followed, by Lady Bentinck, with Papaponga whipping in the field. A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS. Lady Comet, Sanguard and Akbar were withdrawn from the Hack Steeples, leaving a field of nine. Sansalino was sent out favourite, carrying about 140 more tickets than Uncle Dave, with Frizzier the best backed of the others. The race proved a chapter of accidents, Pouri HorSs was first out from Uncle Dave. Along the back the first time Velvet King fell, and appeared to interfere with Rayo, who took no further part in the race. There was little alteration over the first mile, Pouri Hoiho leading into the straight from Uncle Dave, Gilgai, Frizzier and Sansalino. At the back Uncle Dave took up the running from Pouri Hoiho. Gilgai, Sansalino and Frizzier. Half a mile from home Pouri Hoiho was again momentarily in the lead, but was again displaced by Unele Dave, with Gilgai third, followed by Frizzier and Sansalino. The next obstacle brought Pouri Hoiho down. Unele Dave had a substantial lead from Gilgai over the last obstacle, and going on, won by three lengths from Frizzier, who beat Gilgai in the run homo by two lengths. Sansalino, a distance back, was the, only other to finish. Objector and Paul Moore also pulled up. EUPHONIUM WINS WELL. Hipo and Benzora were withdrawn from the Cup, which was run in heavy rain. Of the ten that faced the barrier the public made Euphonium favourite, and.they were right, as Euphonium, after leading nearly all the way, won nicely. Opa and Alario were the next in demand, with Muraahi the best backed of the rest. From a good start, Euphonium was first to show out from Glengariff, Vaward, Opa, Yoma and Sunshot. Entering the back, Euphonium and Glengariff were together in the lead from Alaric and Vaward, with Sunshot and Yoma next. Along the hack, Glengariff, Alaric, Crossfire and Euphonium were almost in line, with Yoma, Vaward and Sunshot next. At the turn Vaward held a slight advantage from Sunshot, Euphonium and Crossfire, with Glengariff and Opa together. As the field entered the straight Enphonium was on terms with Vaward and, assuming the lead, a splendid run home saw him pass the post a good length clear of Opa, with Sunshot half a length away, well clear of Vaward. Glengariff and Yoma were next.

THREE IN A LINE The Oturi Hack Handicap provided a spectacular finish, the three placed horses finishing almost in line. Five withdrawals reduced the field to ten. Merle was backed as though the race was over, carrying nearly as much as Empire Camp, Rapid Fire and Argue combined. A great start saw Grand Lupin first out from Gold Collector, Meric and Empire Camp. There was little alteration to the turn, where Rapid Fire and Subjection were moving up. Gold Collector and Rapid Fire turned for home on terras with Grand Lupin, Merle and Subjection being close up. A great finish saw Gold Collector, Rapid Fire and Subjection pass the post almost in line, the judge’s verdict going to Subjection by a head from Rapid Fire, with Gold Collector half a head atray third. The favourite was half a length away fourth, with Argue fifth. FAVOURITE WINS AGAIN. Subjection, Merle and Cleverlea were withdrawn from the Kohl Hack Handicap, leaving a field of ten. In the biggest betting race of the day, the public gauged the position well, sending Eden Hall out a hot order, carrying more than twice as much as San Fera, with No Response the best hacked of the others. Eden Hall was first out, followed by Anchor, the latter leading along the back and turning for home with Lueernal, Strongholt and Eden Hall handy. Once straightened up Eden Hall went to the front and won by half a’ length from San Fera, who, with No Response, had joined issue over the last bit, the latter being a head away third. Hallownoon was fourth and Strongholt fifth. A ONE DIVIDEND RACE. Scratchings were very heavy in the final race, the President’s Handicap, reducing the field from thirteen to five. A heavy betting race saw a duel for favouritism between Royal Elm and Partaga, the former being a few' pounds better backed. Roburite was also well supported. A splendid despatch saw Flying Shot first out from Roburite, followed by Royal Elm. After a furlong Royal Elm and Flying Shot were in the van and led the way to the straight entrance, where Paitonu moved up on terms. Onee straightened for the post Paitonu went to the front and won by a length and a-half from

Partaga, who finished fast to beat Flying Shot by half a length for second place. Royal Elm and Roburite finished close up.
