SALE OF WATER RIGHTS.
LOCAL BODIES OPPOSE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, Last Night. A conference of local bodies, representing the Greymouth, Kumara, Hokitika boroughs, and the Grey and Westland counties, met at Hokitika this afternoon, in connection with the proposal of the Mines Department to dispose of the Kumara water races. Tn the course of a general discussion, strong opposition was voiced against the sale of these valuable water rights which might prove valuable for electric power purposes. The meeting unanimously resolved that this conference strongly opposes the proposal of the Mines Department to dispose of these valuable national water rights, which should still be held for public purposes.” It was further resolved that in the event of the Government deciding to self, the offer of the Kumara Borough ft>r the Kumara portion should be accepted, thereby ensuring a stable water supply for that town, and that the Waimea portion should be reserved for the us» of the local bodies in the district.
