AFFAIRS OF EUROPE.
CHAMBERLAIN AND MUSSOLINI. By Telegraph—Proas Assn.—Copyright. London, Dec. 29. A meeting between Sir Austen Chamberlain (Minister for Foreign Affairs) and Signor Mussolini (Premier of Italy) was made convenient owing to both spending a brieT holiday at comparatively adjacent places. The former is at Rapollo. The latter, who has been spending Christmas week with his family at Milan, interrupted his journey to Rome, meeting Sir Austen Chamberlain last night, when after a civic reception Signor Mussolini and Sir Austen Chamberlain dined at the Hotel Bristol, where the latter is staying. Signor Mussolini intends continuing to Rome to-day for a council of Ministers and a consultation with Signor Volpi, prior to the latter’s going to London for the war debt conversations. It is naturally assumed that the subject was discussed by Sir Austen Chamberlain and Signor Mussolini, also disarmament, on which it is known the latter holds decided views not in accord with Sir Austen Chamberlain’s.
It is also expected that the repercussions of the Turco-Russian Treaty were Reviewed. Meanwhile Rushdy Bey has arrived in Angora. In a statement to the Press he described the Geneva dec : sion regarding Mosul as “forming only one phase of the negotiations which are yet to take place on this vital question.” The statement is significant, showing that the Government does not share the derisive attitude so far adopted by the Turkish press towards the tentative negotiations with London.
