CROQUET.
TARANAKI TOLRNAMENT. CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEIv - Considerable interest is being main* fested in the annual Taranaki championship croquet tournament, whick opens at New Plymouth un Friday, January 8. Placers who are participating in tlie several competitions are putting in considerate practice and it is expected a high standard of play will be the order throughout the tournament. In addition to Taranaki players competitors from Auckland, Wanganui and Nelson will take part. The programme coiwista of five events, viz., championship singles, championship, doubles, l>r. Home’s rose bowl competition, handicap singles and handicap doubles. The matchea will be played on the New Plymouth, Pukekura Park, Central, Kawaroa and Fitzroy lawns, and as trams and ’buses connect with all these, players will have no difficulty in the matter of transit. Arrangements are well in ha ml to have all la wits in good playing order, and with fine weather the tournament promises to bo most successful. Play commences each day at 9 a.m. In addition to those competing it is expected there will be good attendances of croquet enthus«a»ts aud others to witness the co:Jests.’
