PRINCE FOREGOES RIGHTS

HEIRDOM RENOUNCED

Prince Charles has renounced the succession to the throne of Roumania. The King, in a communique, states that Prince Charles, having informed His Majesty by letter of his irrevocable renunciation of the succession and all prerogatives appertaining to that rank, including membership of the Royal family, be is compelled to accept the renunciation and proclaim his grandson, Michael, aged four, heir to the throne. The Council of State approved the step, and Parliament meets on January 4 to ratify it. The action recalls the sensation of September, 1018, when it was disclosed that Prince Charles had secretly married a Moldavian girl, Zizi Lambrinu, the daughter of a Roumanian general. The King ordered Prince Charles back from his honeymoon and he was sentenced to seventy-five days’ close confinement. He renounced his rights in 1919 and asked to be sent to serve among the soldiers at the front. The marriage was annulled and Prince Charles went on a world trip. He married Princess Helene of Greece In 1920. He has latterly been keenly interested in flying and has made several flights in England. He visited London to attend Queen Alexandra’s funeral. The Queen of Roumania explains that the Royal Family is forbidden to marry Roumanians in order to avoid the family becoming involved in party intrigues. There are no details of the immediate cause of Prince Charles’ renunciation of the heirdom, but it is known that more than once previously he expressed a wish to relinquish it, notably when he married in 1918 the daughter of a Moldavian. He visited England in 1924, arriving by aeroplane from Holland. There were rumours in 1C213 that relations between the Prince and the Princess were strained and divorce proceedings were pending but a denial was Issued.
