TEST OF SAFETY MATCHES.
THE ZONE OF DANGER. Expert tests have proved that safety matches will not take fire at a temperature of less than 390dcg. Fahrenheit. This was a statement made, in a London Court lately by Mr. Dixon chief chemist of Messrs, Bryant and May, when Air. B. Fagan, author and producer of plays, sued a firm for £2490 for the loss of manuscripts, books and theatrical costumes destroyed by fire in a motor van. For the defence, it was suggested that the fire was caused by the ignition of safety matches packed in a tin among jam jars, but Air. Dixon said he had never known safety matches to ignite in this way. He had never heard of safety matches been ignited by a golf ball; but there were many cases on record of safety matches igniting when carried in the jacket pocket with chlorate of potash lozenges.
